If your dog hears one distant rumble of thunder and immediately starts looking for the nearest bunker, you’ve probably tried at least one calming product. Maybe several. Possibly all of them at once while silently bargaining with the weather app.
I’ve been there with Freya.
Her fear of storms and fireworks has gotten worse as she’s gotten older. She shakes, paces, hides under my desk, and generally acts like the weather has personally betrayed her. Fireworks aren’t any better.
Over the years, we’ve tried different ways to help her, including calming supplements. They worked surprisingly well for her, too. But circumstances change, dogs change, and what makes sense for one dog (or even the same dog at a different point in her life) isn’t always the best choice forever.

One important caveat before we get into the individual options: severe noise phobia is more than a dog being a little nervous about thunder. Dogs may tremble, hide, pant, salivate, try to escape or become genuinely panicked during storms and fireworks. Veterinary behavior guidelines recommend combining appropriate non-drug management with veterinary treatment when necessary.
In other words, none of these products needs to carry the entire burden by itself.
1. Snuggle Puppy: My Current Favorite for Freya
I originally thought of Snuggle Puppy primarily as something for puppies.
It makes sense. The whole concept is built around recreating some of the comfort a puppy gets from sleeping beside its mother and littermates. The Original Snuggle Puppy combines a plush dog with a pulsing Real-Feel Heartbeat, and you can also add an air-activated heat pack for warmth.
But puppies aren’t the only dogs who find rhythmic sounds and physical comfort soothing. Freya is very much proof of that.
Why I Like the Heartbeat for Storm Anxiety
The thing that surprised me most was how Freya reacted to the heartbeat itself. During one particularly stressful event, I noticed that she seemed to settle when she was near the Snuggle Puppy with the heartbeat running. Her heart rate seemed to slow down as she listened to it.
Obviously, that is one dog and one personal observation, not a clinical trial. I’m not going to tell you that a stuffed dog magically lowers canine heart rates.
What I can tell you is that Freya appeared noticeably calmer.
And unlike some calming approaches, she doesn’t have to actively do anything for it to work as a comfort object. She doesn’t need to eat something. I don’t have to wrestle her into anything. I can simply turn on the heartbeat and put Snuggle Puppy beside her in whatever spot she has chosen as today’s Official Storm Shelter.
Sometimes that’s under my desk. Dogs aren’t especially concerned with interior design during thunderstorms.
The Biggest Advantage for Us: Nothing Goes Into Her Body
This has become increasingly important for me. Freya is now on heart medication. Because of that, we’re much more careful about giving her anything additional, including supplements that would ordinarily be considered safe.
That doesn’t mean calming supplements suddenly became bad. It means her individual situation changed.
Veterinary sources make the same basic point about supplements: “natural” doesn’t automatically mean interaction-free. Even over-the-counter products can potentially interact with medications, which is why your veterinarian should know what supplements you’re giving your dog.
Snuggle Puppy sidesteps that issue for us because it is a non-ingestible calming aid. Nothing is being absorbed, metabolized or added to her medication routine.
It’s simply something comforting in her environment.

Things to Consider
The obvious limitation is that your dog has to actually find the heartbeat comforting.
Some dogs may cuddle directly against Snuggle Puppy. Others may simply want it nearby. And I fully expect there are dogs who will look at it and say, metaphorically speaking, “Thank you for the stuffed animal, but I remain deeply concerned about the sky.”
That’s dogs.
For a dog with serious noise phobia, I’d look at Snuggle Puppy as one tool in a larger anxiety plan rather than a guaranteed solution.

2. ThunderShirt: A Great Idea…Unless Your Dog Is Freya
ThunderShirt takes a completely different approach. Instead of using sound or warmth, it wraps around your dog’s torso and applies gentle, constant pressure. The basic idea is similar to swaddling, and ThunderShirt says that many pets respond to that calming pressure.
Anxiety wraps are also among the non-drug options veterinary sources suggest trying for dogs frightened by thunderstorms and fireworks.
I’ve heard some fantastic ThunderShirt success stories.
I have also never seriously considered putting one on Freya during a storm. Why? Because Freya hates clothes. Not “I’d rather not wear that sweater” hates clothes.
She dramatically hates clothes.
Put clothing on this dog and she collapses onto the ground as if we have stripped her of every remaining shred of dignity and sentenced her to a life of unimaginable suffering. It’s quite a performance.
So putting a snug-fitting garment on Freya when she’s already anxious would probably accomplish the exact opposite of what we’re trying to do.
And I think that’s an important distinction when people recommend calming products.
ThunderShirt Isn’t the Problem. The Individual Dog Matters.
If your dog doesn’t mind wearing things, ThunderShirt is absolutely worth considering.
Some dogs actually seem to enjoy gentle pressure. For those dogs, having that consistent sensation around the body may help them settle when thunder starts rumbling or the neighborhood decides July Fourth should apparently last until August.
But if your dog freezes, struggles, hides or becomes visibly stressed when you put clothing on them, I’d introduce a ThunderShirt well before you actually need it.
Don’t wait until fireworks start and suddenly unveil The Garment. Let your dog investigate it first. Pair it with treats and positive experiences. Put it on briefly during calm periods so it doesn’t automatically predict something scary.
That also gives you a chance to find out whether your dog considers it comforting or an affront to canine liberty.

3. Calming Chews: Our Former Go-To That I Still Think Has a Place
Calming chews were our go-to for quite a while, and I don’t want their current place farther down my personal list to sound like they didn’t work. They did.
We’ve had really good results with calming supplements for Freya.
Depending on the product, calming supplements may contain ingredients such as L-theanine, L-tryptophan, casein-derived ingredients, melatonin or other compounds intended to support relaxation. Different products use very different formulas, so “calming chew” is really a category rather than one specific treatment.
For mild situational anxiety, supplements may be enough for some dogs. For dogs with more significant anxiety, they’re often one part of a broader plan.
Why Calming Chews Worked Well for Us
They’re easy. You know fireworks are coming, you give your dog the appropriate product according to its directions, and hopefully it takes some of the edge off before the noise gets bad.
There’s also no clothing involved, which earned them immediate bonus points in Freya’s opinion.
The bigger advantage, though, was that we could actually see a difference in her.
She wasn’t necessarily oblivious to the storm, but she was better able to settle instead of escalating into that cycle where every new boom made her increasingly anxious.
If Freya weren’t taking other medications now, calming supplements would absolutely still be something I’d consider.
Why We’re More Cautious With Them Now
Freya’s health situation changed. As I mentioned earlier, she’s on heart medications now, and I’ve become very careful about adding supplements unless we’ve discussed them with her veterinarian.
Even products marketed as natural can contain biologically active ingredients, and veterinary guidance recommends checking with your vet before adding therapeutic supplements because side effects and drug interactions are possible.
That’s especially important if your dog already takes prescription medications.
It doesn’t mean calming chews are unsafe for dogs on medication. It means your veterinarian needs to make that call based on the specific supplement and your dog’s specific medications and health history.
For Freya, it’s simply easier right now to reach for something like Snuggle Puppy that doesn’t add another ingredient to the equation.

So Which Is Best for Thunderstorms and Fireworks?
There’s really no single answer here. The best choice depends heavily on how your dog prefers to be comforted.
If your dog seeks out stuffed toys, likes lying close to you or seems soothed by rhythmic sound, I’d try Snuggle Puppy first.
If your dog loves being wrapped up, leans into physical pressure and couldn’t care less about wearing clothes, ThunderShirt may make more sense.
If your dog doesn’t want anything touching them but has responded well to nutritional calming aids, calming chews are certainly worth discussing with your veterinarian.
For Freya, Snuggle Puppy wins because it fits the dog she is now. She hates clothing, so ThunderShirt isn’t a good match for her personality. We’ve had excellent results with calming chews in the past, but her heart medications make me more cautious about giving her additional supplements.
Snuggle Puppy gives me another option that doesn’t involve either issue. I turn on the heartbeat. She decides where she wants it. That’s it.
There is something I really like about giving an anxious dog that much control, too. If Freya wants to lie directly beside it, she can. If she wants it six inches away while she hides under my desk, that’s fine too.
Nobody has to put anything on her or convince her to eat anything. For us, that’s a pretty big advantage.
You Don’t Necessarily Have to Choose One
This is probably the biggest point I’d make to someone asking this question.
These aren’t mutually exclusive products.
If your dog tolerates clothing and your veterinarian is comfortable with the calming supplement you’re using, you could potentially use all three approaches together.
Think of it less like:

and more like:
heartbeat/comfort + gentle pressure + appropriate calming support.
They’re addressing anxiety in different ways.
You might put your dog’s ThunderShirt on before the storm begins, give an approved calming chew at the appropriate time, and place Snuggle Puppy in the dog’s safe space with the heartbeat running.
Add closed curtains, background noise and somewhere comfortable to retreat, and you’ve created several layers of support rather than expecting one product to do everything.
Veterinary behavior guidance generally supports this broader approach to noise phobias. Environmental management, behavior modification and, when appropriate, supplements or medication can be used together rather than treating them as competing solutions.
A Few Other Things That Can Help During Storms and Fireworks
Whatever calming product you choose, I’d also work on the environment.
Give your dog access to the place where they naturally feel safest. That might be a bedroom, bathroom, basement, closet, crate or the tiny space underneath your desk that you previously thought belonged to your feet.
Close windows and curtains to reduce noise and flashes of light. Fans, television, music or white noise can help mask some of the outside sounds. Veterinary behaviorists also recommend creating a safe area and using gradual desensitization and counterconditioning outside of actual storms when possible.
And don’t force interaction. If your dog wants to lie beside you, fine. If they want to hide somewhere safe, let them.
The goal isn’t to convince them that thunder isn’t scary while thunder is actively happening. That’s a fairly ambitious debate to have with a terrified dog.
You’re trying to help them get through it with as little distress as possible.
When Calming Products Aren’t Enough
There’s also a point where I wouldn’t keep buying different calming products and hoping the next one fixes everything.
If your dog panics during storms or fireworks, tries to escape, injures themselves, destroys doors or windows, can’t settle for hours, or seems to be getting progressively worse, talk to your veterinarian.
Noise phobia can become quite severe, and some dogs need prescription anxiety medication in addition to environmental and behavioral support. AAHA behavior-management guidelines specifically recognize thunderstorm and fireworks phobia as conditions that may warrant medication alongside non-drug management.
Needing medication doesn’t mean the ThunderShirt failed, the calming chew failed or you didn’t train your dog correctly.
Sometimes a frightened dog needs more help. Freya gets gabapentin (approved by her vet, and we go with the lowest dose that works for her) on really severe thunderstorm days.
My Pick for Freya: Snuggle Puppy
If I were choosing purely based on which of these products has the best chance of working for every dog, I couldn’t give you an answer.
Dogs are far too opinionated for that.
But for Freya, Snuggle Puppy is my current favorite of the three.
ThunderShirt is fantastic for dogs that find pressure comforting, but Freya’s relationship with clothing can best be described as hostile.
Calming chews worked extremely well for us for years, and I would absolutely recommend looking into them for the right dog. Her current medications simply make me more cautious about adding anything else she has to ingest.

There’s nothing to swallow, nothing wrapped around her body and nothing that interferes with where she chooses to hide. I can put the heartbeat beside her and let her use it on her own terms.
And I’ve watched my extremely storm-phobic dog appear to relax while listening to that little heartbeat.
For me, that’s enough reason to keep it close whenever the forecast starts looking ugly.
