If you’ve looked into joint supplements for your dog, you’ve probably seen the words glucosamine and chondroitin a lot! They’re two of the most common ingredients for joint support, but what exactly are they? And why are they always paired together? Let’s get into it!

What Is Glucosamine?

Glucosamine is a naturally occurring amino sugar produced by the body that builds and maintains cartilage; the tough, flexible tissue that cushions and protects the joints. It stops them from rubbing together when they move, for comfortable, frictionless mobility.

Your dog’s cartilage naturally breaks down with age, leading to inflammation and pain, but taking glucosamine can help. While it can’t repair or rebuild lost cartilage, it can slow the breakdown and support the maintenance of what’s already there.

What Is Chondroitin?

Chondroitin is another naturally occurring substance found in cartilage, but it plays a slightly different role. Its primary job is to help cartilage retain water and maintain elasticity, so it can continue to lubricate and cushion the joints.

Why Are Glucosamine and Chondroitin So Often Combined?

Most dog supplements combine glucosamine and chondroitin because they work so well together, targeting and covering different aspects of cartilage health. Glucosamine provides the building blocks for cartilage maintenance, while chondroitin keeps it hydrated and flexible.

Realistic Results

It’s important to remember that no supplement can reverse aging or arthritis, only ease the symptoms that come with them. Many owners report:

  • Better mobility, movement and stamina
  • More energy and excitement about walks
  • Easier standing, climbing, and jumping
  • Less stiffness, discomfort, and pain

Consistency Is Key

Joint supplements aren’t quick fixes. It can take weeks to see meaningful improvements, so be patient, and remember, consistency is key! It’s best to make your dog’s supplements a part of their daily routine by mixing them with food at mealtimes or replacing one of their daily treats (if it’s chewable). That way, you won’t miss a dose and you’ll see a difference much sooner.

Which Dogs Benefit Most From Glucosamine and Chondroitin?

While any dog can benefit from maintaining healthy joints, supplements are especially good for:

Old age, a bigger body, certain injuries, and a higher activity level can all cause strain on the joints and increase the likelihood of arthritis.

Not All Joint Supplements Are Created Equal

The ingredients list is not the be-all and end-all of a good supplement. Quality and dosage matter too! Some supplements include trendy ingredients in their formula to attract their target audience, but lack high quality sources or quantities big enough to make a real difference.

Always check the label for third-party certification seals and avoid cheap or “proprietary” blends. It’s best to ask your vet about what your dog needs specifically, but general guidelines recommend a daily dosage of glucosamine and chondroitin starting at 7-14 mg per pound for the first 4 – 6 weeks, then halved for long-term maintenance.

The Bottom Line

When it comes to these two ingredients, the most important thing to know is that it’s not an either-or situation. Glucosamine helps to maintain cartilage, while chondroitin keeps it comfortable. When taken together, they form the foundation of good joint health and mobility.
