Are you looking for a short haired breeds that doesn’t shed?  Short haired dogs tend to require a lot less grooming as they are not prone to getting mats in their hair and their coats, for the most part, let dirt roll off (unless he has been in the mud, that’s a different story!)  All dogs will shed some, but this list includes some that will not enough to think you might be able to create another dog out of what they leave behind.  Here is a starter list of short haired breeds that have minimal shedding.

Short Haired Breeds that Don’t Shed

Wire-haired Daschund: Out of the three kinds of coats (wire-haired, smooth-haired and long-haired) these tend to shed the least.  If you want to avoid even more shedding, you can hand-strip his coat.  Removing his winter coat allows for more growth, which eliminates the need for shedding.  Avoid clipping his coat, as this does not reduce shedding, it only removes the tips, leaving the under coat in tact.

Boston Terrier: These compact dogs have minimal shedding.  You can avoid even more shedding by knowing his shedding season, which is around late fall or late spring.  All you need to do is every couple of days during this time, take a grooming glove or rubber brush to his coat every couple of days.  They are great with kids as they can play for hours.  Also an excellent choice for a growing family and they don’t take up too much space.

Whippet: Think of him as a smaller version of the Greyhound.  He wears a sheer coat, allowing for possibly the most minimal grooming of all dogs.  They also have minimal health issues.  Very smart dogs, they learn quick and are easily trained.  A Whippet is a great family dog in this aspect.

Rhodesian Ridgeback: You may not know this, but he is originally a hunting dog.  He tends to get rough when he plays, so may not be the best choice for a family dog.  However, don’t rule him out because he can be trained.  Low maintenance, he does not require routine brushing.  A bonus is they tend to only bark when necessary, so pay attention when he does!

This is just a list to get you started on your search and some breeds to think about that have short hair and do not shed.  It is important to remember that all dogs shed, just some more than others.
