Buying the next big thing can be a hard thing to overcome.  This applies to all areas of our lives, and especially for our children or our pets.  You want to feel like you are doing the best you can for them, so when new things come along you often spring to purchase them in hopes of making their lives better or easier.  The concept of a smart dog collar is another one of those “next big things” in the world of pet ownership.  There is considerable question and controversy around the concept and we are going to look at a few things that you should be thinking of when you look at potentially upgrading your pets collar.

The activity monitor collar:  There are already products out on the market like FitBark that are similar to what we use for tracking our movements.  FitBit has become a popular method of tracking steps, and the FitBark is a similar product for your pets.  A dog bone shaped attachment latches onto your pets collar and tracks their movements.  This is a great way to consider if your pet is getting enough exercise each day, but like any product of that type it is not always 100% accurate.

The health monitor collar:  There has been talk about a collar that would also monitor things like heart rate, blood pressure and overall health statistics as your pet is active. While this could be a fun way to learn more about how dogs bodies work, it isn’t something that is necessarily worth the investment.  Unlike humans, animals tend to have a much better control over their body and when they need to take breaks, cool off or slow down.  The need to monitor their heart rate while they exercise is not a necessity, but an interesting bonus that will serve to show you more about the physical workings of your pet.

If you are concerned about your pets health, a collar won’t give you much insight.  Watching their behavior, reactions and having routine veterinary care a part of your routine is much better than using a smart dog collar to track your dogs health.

What do you think? Do you need a smart dog collar to track your dog’s health? Would you use this cool pet tech tool?
