I recently ran across a very interesting question in a forum. The poster was asking about hypoallergenic dog food that was safe for people with food allergies as well. They were looking for a hypoallergenic dog food that contained no soy, wheat, peanuts, celery, crab, mustard, cinnamon, sesame, or kiwi. It was quite a list! I immediately thought of duck and potato hypoallergenic dog food.

Original Question: I need recommendations for a wheat and soy free dry puppy food for a 4 month old Australian Terrier. The puppy has no food allergies, but the people have life threatening allergies so the food must be free of wheat, soy, peanuts, nuts, celery, crab, mustard, cinnamon, sesame and kiwi. (Barley and rye are OK because my daughter is anaphlylactic to wheat, not gluten intolerant.) I only feed kibble and will not feed raw. I would like it to be peas free or have a low amount of pea protein if possible; but that’s a personal preference not due to allergies.

Duck and Potato Hypoallergenic Dog Food – Safely Plain

Duck and potato fits the description the poster was looking for because it’s a very plain food. Duck and potato hypoallergenic dog food is pretty much the grandfather of all hypoallergenic dog foods, and as such it is very bland. Its ingredients are all based around giving a dog exactly what it needs in its diet with very little frills, which means very few ingredients. Which means that there is very little chance of a person with food allergies having any sort of negative effect from handling the food.

As I said, duck and potato is the original hypoallergenic dog food, which means that almost all companies that make hypoallergenic dog food make a duck and potato variety. While the ingredients are somewhat different with each company, one thing is always the same. Their duck and potato formulas are generally free of wheat, soy, and anything that most people are allergic to. There are still companies that are better than others, though.

Natural Balance

In doing my research, I discovered that Natural Balance Duck and Potato is the plainest of the plain. Its list of ingredients is pretty much duck, potato, and vitamins and minerals. If you have someone in your life with a myriad of food allergies, this is the brand to choose because of its epic plainness.

Blue Buffalo

Blue Buffalo also has a duck and potato hypoallergenic dog food. This one is free of wheat, soy, dairy, and shellfish. It does have a few extra ingredients that Natural Balance doesn’t such as peas, pumpkin, chicory root, kelp, blueberries, cranberries, barley grass, and yucca extract. However, none of these ingredients generally post a problem to people with food allergies with the exception of cranberries.

Your Best Bets for Safe Hypoallergenic Dog Food

Although there are several varieties of duck and potato hypoallergenic dog food out there, Natural Balance and Blue Buffalo are your best bets if you’re looking to avoid ingredients that may cause a problem for a human with food allergies. Believe it or not, Hill’s Duck and Potato actually had soy, which surprised me, considering that soy is a major offender in dogs with food allergies.

If your dog has food allergies – or if you’re just looking to feed your dog a diet that’s safe for an allergy sufferer in your life – Natural Balance and Blue Buffalo are the two brands to go for. They are interchangeable when it comes to your dog’s health, as they are both extremely high quality hypoallergenic dog foods.
