Bichon Frise
This little white puff ball is great for apartment living! Also, if you are a first-time dog owner, he is an excellent choice. The Bichon Frise is an all around friendly dog, affectionate with his family, friendly with strangers, dog-friendly and best of all he loves kids. He is easy to train and very smart. He has a high energy level, but that doesn’t mean he needs a big yard to play in, he just loves to play. Daily walks will benefit and suffice him, toss a ball around the house and he is one happy pup!
Mini Schnauzer
His wiry coat requires some grooming but nothing you can’t handle. The Mini Schnauzer has lots of energy this little guy! If you are looking for a dog who wants to go everywhere you go (even the bathroom), then you want to bring home a mini schnauzer (although I do feel most all dogs tend to follow their owners into the bathroom, the reason, I am not sure of). He is very affectionate with his family, so expect lots of love from this little guy. He has the potential for weight gain, so be sure to give him a good diet and not too many table scraps.
Yorkshire Terrier
These little guys are big on personality! I often think of them as girls because you see them so many times with a cute little bow between their ears that is keeping the hair out of her face. She lives very well in an apartment but doesn’t like to be left alone very much. If you are gone long hours on a regular basis, she might not be the best fit for you. She dons a long haired coat that needs to be maintained with grooming, so she doesn’t get matted but that is just good quality time with your dog!
Poodle
What a smart dog! Everything I ever read about the poodle, regardless of the size is always good things. He is very intelligent, very trainable and so clever. You don’t have to groom him into the style you see for shows (although there is an interesting story behind why they have little tufts of fur where they do). Just be sure you do a good job of keeping him groomed, whether you do it yourself or pamper him with a grooming visit. He will get matted if you let it go. He will also love your kids (just as much as you do!) Your poodle will be very playful, probably entertain the kids for hours!
Italian Greyhound
You might find this guy curled up under a nearby blanket. He loves to seek out warmth and other soft things, so watch out where you sit! While he might sound like your perfect couch potato, he does have some energy he will release by running around your apartment! You want to keep him on a leash. He has a tendency to dash away. He might love romping around at the dog park, just keep an eye on him, he is quick!
There are so many breed options for hypoallergenic dogs that will do just fine in an apartment. Even if you are not affected by allergies, a hypoallergenic dog is a great companion! They tend to be the lesser of the shedders when it comes to dogs. All dogs shed, to some degree, but these guys keep it to a minimum.
