How to stop a dog fight. That’s a commonly searched phrase in the dog owner forums. Most times, owners are looking for information on how to separate dogs or rescue their dog when a fight is already happening. The better thing to do is to know how to stop a dog fight before it even starts. The old saying, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” definitely holds true in the case of dogs fighting.

How to Stop a Dog Fight Before it Starts – Basics are all You Need

Stopping a dog fight before it starts is usually a straightforward and simple thing to do. It mostly involves a little common sense and remembering that dogs are not people. So let’s take a look at what we can do to prevent a brawl before it ever gets to that point.

Give a Wide Berth

Never encroach on another dog’s space with your dog. Whether you’re walking the dog or in the vet waiting room, keep your dog in his area and out of the space of other dogs. Remember, your dog may be the most friendly guy in the world, but not everyone else’s dog is.

Watch for Aggressive Signs

Always be vigilant about looking for signs that either your dog or another person’s dog is gearing up to mix it up. Some signs of a dog feeling threatened or like it might have to fight include raised hackles, laid back ears, baring teeth, and pushing against another dog with his chest. Although if your dog is close enough to do that, it might be too late.

Keep Him Leashed

Want to know how to stop a dog fight before it starts? Keep dogs on a leash. This is one that seems like it shouldn’t need to be mentioned, but surprisingly it does. I can’t tell you how many dogs came into our vet practice because they got into fights by roaming the neighborhood. Unless your yard is fenced, it’s always best to keep your dog on a leash. It’s safer, and in most townships it’s illegal to keep your dog unleashed.

Avoid Triggers

If you have a dog who has triggers, avoid them at all costs. Don’t take a dog who is resource aggressive to a dog park where he can get into a fight over a ball. If he is aggressive to other dogs when they’re on your property don’t allow people to bring over pets. That sort of thing.

How to Stop a Dog Fight Before it Starts – Practice Common Sense

The biggest key in knowing how to stop a dog fight before it starts is to practice common sense. Avoid your dog’s triggers. Don’t allow him to intrude upon another dog’s space unless the owner specifically tells you their dog likes to play. Watch for signs of aggression in your dog and in other dogs around you. As long as you’re vigilant and don’t give your dog free reign, you already know how to stop a dog fight before it starts. You’re doing it! =)
