Don’t forget Fido this Thanksgiving!

Use some of that cooked bird to make this yummy homemade turkey treat for dogs!

I know my dog looks forward to the holiday every year because he gets to share in the big meal.

We always have SO much leftover turkey, though, and even he gets tired of eating the same old sliced meat tossed onto his kibble.

This is a creative way to get a little more mileage out of the bird and give your pooch a relatively healthy treat at the same time.

Heads up for our canine pals with allergies, this recipe is not hypoallergenic as is.

However, if you follow the suggestion and swap out the wheat flour for something like coconut flour, it’s pretty allergen-friendly overall.

I thought that the turkey would be an issue because chicken is so high on the allergen list, but turns out it’s really not. Still, all dogs are different, so it’s important that you talk to your vet and have a good understanding of your dog’s individual allergies before you make any homemade dog treats.

Helpful substitutions and add-ins

Before you run off to make these tasty treats for your dogs, I just want to give you a few tips and notes.

Substitutions:

  • FLOUR: As I mentioned above, you can swap out the flour with something else. While coconut flour works best as a substitute, you could also use almond flour. Oat flour also works.
  • EGGS: There are SO many possible egg substitutes out there. Check out this list from All Recipes for ideas. Apple sauce, pumpkin puree, or bananas all work pretty well.
  • VEGETABLE OIL:  Pretty much any type of dog-friendly oil works here. If I’m not using veggie oil I almost always opt for coconut oil, though. It’s just easier to work with. Plus, it’s good for your dog.

Other add-ins:

In addition to the basic ingredients listed above, you can add other leftovers to make this turkey dog treats recipe even tastier. Just make sure that there are no onions or garlic in anything. Some possibilities include:

  • Broth (you’ll need to adjust the other liquids, though)
  • Peas
  • Cranberries
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Green beans

Depending on what you add (and how much of it you use), you may need to adjust other ingredients. As long as you still have a biscuit-like dough, you should be good to go.

A word about the yeast: I always research the ingredients in our recipes, and I did come across a few articles that said some dogs may have an allergy to yeast. It’s not as common as other ingredients like chicken, wheat, and so on, but it still exists.

So I looked for alternatives. One that I found suggests using double-acting baking soda. Apparently, baking soda needs an acid to make it work, like lemon juice or something. I did not know this.

However, double-acting baking soda already has the extra acid included. This article on FitDay explains it all better than I can. It’s geared towards humans, but there’s no reason it can’t work in a dog treat recipe.
