Today we’re sharing a delicious and super simple homemade carrot dog treats recipe! This one is perfect for dogs with allergies to most common meats, as it’s completely vegetarian. However, because of the flour, it’s not exactly a hypoallergenic treat. You could swap that out and use something like coconut flour or almond meal instead if your dog can’t tolerate wheat. Keep reading to learn who to make it!

Homemade Carrot Dog Treats Recipe

The thing I love about this recipe is that it uses ingredients most of us keep on hand, so you don’t have to run to the store to buy a ton of pricey things. Of all the items on the ingredients list, I think the only thing I don’t consistently have in my house is the bran. Make sure you check out the video tutorial and the printable recipe card below the instructions! Plus keep reading for a few more of my favorite homemade dog treat ideas!

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups fresh minced parsley
  • 1/4 cup finely shredded or chopped carrots
  • 1/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 2 3/4 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2 tablespoons bran
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 to 1 cup of water

How to Make

  • Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and place the rack in the middle of the oven.
  • Combine the parsley, carrots, oil and cheese in a large bowl, stirring until they’re mixed.
  • Add the flour, bran and baking powder to your mixture, stirring until combined.
  • Slowly add the water, starting with 1/2 cup and mixing. You want your dough to be moist but not soggy and wet. If needed, gradually add a bit more water.
  • Knead your dough for about a minute.
  • Roll our the dough on a floured surface until it is about 1/2 inch thick. Cut into squares (or use your favorite cookie cutter) and place them on a lightly greased baking sheet.

  • Bake for about 20-30 minutes, just until the treats turn brown and get slightly hard. You don’t want them overdone because they will harden up a bit more as they cool.
  • Let cool completely, then store in an airtight container.

Easy Ingredient Swaps for Dogs with Dietary Needs

One of the great things about homemade dog treats is how customizable they are. If your pup is picky or has dietary restrictions, you can easily tweak this recipe without sacrificing flavor or texture.

Here are some simple and healthy swaps to try:

  • Parsley: If your dog isn’t a fan of parsley or if you don’t have it on hand, try using fresh spinach or kale instead. Both are packed with vitamins and antioxidants. Just be sure to chop them finely so they blend well into the dough.
  • Carrots: Carrots are great for crunch and natural sweetness, but you can also use finely diced zucchini, sweet potato, or even pumpkin puree. These are all dog-safe and bring their own nutritional perks to the table.
  • Mozzarella Cheese: For dairy-sensitive dogs, you can leave out the cheese altogether or replace it with a small amount of nutritional yeast for a cheesy flavor without the lactose. Goat cheese is another gentler option if your dog tolerates it better than cow’s milk cheese.
  • Whole Wheat Flour: If your dog has a wheat allergy, swap it with oat flour, rice flour, or a blend of gluten-free flours. Oat flour in particular works well in most recipes and is easy on digestion.
  • Bran: If you don’t have bran or want a different source of fiber, you can substitute with ground flaxseed or a bit of pumpkin puree. Just keep an eye on dough consistency if using wetter ingredients.
  • Water: If you want to bump up the flavor a bit, use low-sodium chicken broth instead of water. Just make sure it doesn’t contain onion, garlic, or other harmful additives.

Swapping ingredients can help tailor the treats to your dog’s specific preferences or health needs—and it’s a fun way to experiment with flavors they’ll love!
