During a chat in our favorite dog group, we came across a great question that really got us thinking: what is the highest quality non-grain-free, fish-based food you can get? This led us to wonder something else entirely: what is the best overall high quality kibble? With no less than four aisles of dog food in your average mass-retail pet store, it’s a pretty legit question! We tackled both questions at once below!
What is the best high quality kibble for your dog?
There is a lot of hype both in the human world and K-9 world around eating grain free. Is it really the best option for your dog? Sometimes, we tend to mimic our diets in our pet’s diet and that is not the best way to go about deciding what to feed your furry friend. Is gluten free and grain free the same thing? The answer is no.
Grain-free foods are just that: free of all grains. Gluten-free foods are free of gluten and not all grain contains gluten. You can find gluten in grains such as rye, wheat and barley. So, your dog foods that are gluten free may not be grain free. However, grain-free foods will always be gluten free. Make sense?
Our pets have evolved over the years from their wild ancestors who did not consume a diet that included grain. Just as we have evolved from cavemen to consume diets that that are not strictly paleo-like. Dogs these days are actually able to digest grains fairly easily and they do not harm them in anyway, unless they have an allergy to grains (which is quite possible!).

Acana: They carry something for every stage of life and size; puppy large, puppy small, adult large, adult small, puppy and junior and finally for seniors. They also carry some specialized food for sport and agility and light and fit for the active ones. Acana is considered above average when it comes to dry dog food. They are a mostly plant-based kibble. The protein comes from chicken meal, which contains double the amount of protein than regular chicken. Find them on Amazon or at www.acana.com
Blue Buffalo Wilderness: This brand markets many recipes for puppy, adult and senior dogs, with duck, salmon and chicken being the main ingredient in the different recipes. Blue Buffalo Wilderness is also considered above average in the dry dog food category. They do use chicken over chicken meal, which is about 80% water, so when it is cooked, is significantly lower than the original weight. Nonetheless, a great brand to look into.
