Buy a Bag, Give a Meal™ at PetSmart
You read that right, every single bag in every single size of cat and dog food qualifies. Each time you buy said bag, PetSmart will donate a meal to shelters, rescue groups AND food banks that make sure it will go to hungry dogs and cats. When I said it doesn’t get any easier than this, I meant it. On your end, all you have to do is shop for your pet’s favorite food at PetSmart, something you’re probably already doing anyway! They take it from there.
For each bag purchased, PetSmart Charities will donate 5 oz dog food (which is the size of a meal for a 40-lb dog) or 1.5 oz cat food (enough for a 10-lb cat). PetSmart hopes to donate 60 million meals. That number is based on their past sales, they haven’t set a specific cap on the donations. Check out the video for more information.
I love this program so much, especially because PetSmart recognizes the fact that not all hungry pets are in shelters. While a staggering 7 million pets enter shelters every year, many still live and happy, healthy, loving homes with pet parents who happen to be a little down on their luck. Through this program, food banks who serve low-income families will also have better access to pet food.
While the Buy a Bag, Give a Meal™ campaign is their biggest philanthropic campaign so far, it’s far from the only one. PetSmart Charities has a long history of helping animals in need. Each year, their huge in-store adoption event helps half a million animals find loving forever homes. They also help provide disaster relief when needed, create or work with programs that enhance the bond between pet and pet parent, and work to educate people to prevent pet homelessness.
