Tips and Suggestions

DIY Pet-Safe Essential Oil Deodorizer Spray 6As far as essential oils go, you can really go with just about any scent that you like. The lemongrass smells beautiful and lively, but if you’re looking for a more relaxing scent, lavender is also fantastic. During the winter months, when everyone is feeling stuffy, I love to make a room spray with peppermint and eucalyptus. It doesn’t just zap stinky animal smells, it helps clear a foggy head. Try mixing and matching your own scents! You can get a great starter set of essential oils on Amazon.

Another important tip: when you’re using water to make your room spray, you kind of have to use it relatively quickly. While the essential oils do have antibacterial properties, water itself can get kind of germy when you don’t have a preservative in it. I usually try to use mine within a week. For longer-lasting room spray, swap out the water with a high-proof, generally odorless alcohol. You can also use vinegar. It may sound gross, but if you use the right essential oils, the odor from the vinegar does balance out. Plus vinegar itself is a pretty fab DIY deodorizer.

While this recipe is pretty safe for just about all surfaces, it’s always a good idea to do a spot test before you go dousing your grandmother’s quilt or your expensive sofa! And while it is pet-safe, please do not spray it ON your pet. Yes, you can make your own essential oil sprays for your dog, but you have to know which EOs are safe for their skin and fur. Some can be incredibly harsh, even when diluted. Please don’t put essential oils directly on your skin or your pet’s fur or skin. Even if you’ve read otherwise, there are very few EOs that can be applied that way, and even those can be irritating to super sensitive or irritated skin.  Can you tell I’m passionate about essential oils? I’ll let you go ahead and get started on your DIY room spray now! Enjoy!
