How to Shop for Organic Dog Beds

When you look for organic dog beds for sale, it’s super important to pay very close attention to the listing descriptions. Don’t just rely on titles or search results.

As I’ve said before, sellers throw in keywords that have nothing to do with the product just because they know people are searching for them.

This, of course, causing tons of false results, which makes finding what you’re looking for a total nightmare.

If you’re searching on your own, go beyond the bullet point descriptions. Check out questions and answers, read reviews, and ask questions yourself before investing in a bed.

Don’t worry, though; I did all the work for you with my top picks below! Each of these beds is either entirely organic or very close to it.

When they’re not 100% organic (or if I even have a vague suspicion that a part isn’t), I’ll let you know.

Ready to check them out? Good!

1. Wool-Filled Dog Bed from CeCesWool

Wool-Filled Dog Bed from CeCesWool

One of my favorite organic wool dog beds on Etsy, this one has a simple and natural look that fits in well with any décor.

Features & Pros

  • Removable 100% cotton canvas cover
  • Filled entirely with wool
  • Very durable
  • Sturdy zipper keeps everything together
  • Cover is washable and dryable
  • Comes in three sizes- M, L, & XL
  • 5 natural colors.
  • Made in the USA

Cons

  • No XS size for tiny pups
  • The XL may not be big enough for giant breeds
  • You have to go to each listing separately to find different sizes.
  • Doesn’t ship free, so you’ll have to tack on an extra $15.

Recommendation

The link in the “buy now” button is for the medium size. If you need a different size, check out CeCesWool’s shop.

2. Smiling Paws Organic Bolster Dog Bed

Smiling Paws Pets Large Washable Dog & Cat Bed/Lounge with Extra Soft Organic Cotton Sides, Premium Plush Puppy & Kitty Sofa for Medium & Large Doggies & Animals (35" x 26" x...

While the Smiling Paws bed isn’t 100% organic, it’s still a good pick for those on a tight budget.

It’s also one of the few somewhat organic bolster beds that I could find.

Features & Pros

  • Luxury bed that’s remarkably affordable.
  • Made with organic cotton.
  • Topped with soft faux Sherpa fabric that’s made from non-toxic materials.
  • Non-skid bottom
  • Machine-washable on the gentle cycle
  • Money-back guarantee that you’ll love it.

Cons

  • Only two sizes and not big enough for giant dogs.
  • Not chew-resistant.
  • Not orthopedic enough for older dogs.
  • The faux Sherpa may be non-toxic, but it’s not organic.
  • No removable cover, you have to wash the whole bed.

Recommendation

As far as organic bolster dog beds go, this is the closest I could find. It misses the mark just slightly, but that “miss” still involves totally dog-safe materials.

Unfortunately, while the faux Sherpa is non-toxic and gentle on your dog’s skin, it’s not organic.

According to the brand in response to a question on Amazon, “The faux sherpa lining is made from a non harmful polyester and the bottom is a strong polyester taffeta material.”

3. Naturepedic Organic Pet Bed (made from a crib mattress)

Naturepedic Organic Crib Mattress, 2-Stage Natural Mattress with Breathable Crib Mattress Pad, Waterproof, Non-Toxic, Standard Crib Size

I know a lot of people are searching for a Naturepedic Organic dog bed but they don’t actually make pet products.

However, you can very easily turn their crib mattress into a comfy bed for Fido!

Check out the YouTube video below for tips on how to do it, then read on for the pros and cons of the mattress itself.

Features & Pros

  • The entire bed is made from certified organic cotton fabric and filling.
  • Not just organic, but totally non-toxic as well.
  • Mesh surfaces makes the bed more breathable.
  • The quilted surface layer is removable and machine washable.
  • A waterproof core helps prevent accidents from seeping into the mattress and through your floor.
  • Waterproof surfaces under the removable layer, just wipe them clean and go.
  • No harmful chemicals like latex, soy, vinyl, phthalates, or formaldehyde.
  • Hypoallergenic (at least for babies, so the same should be true for your dog).
  • Large enough for big dogs!
  • Made in the USA

Cons

  • It’s one of the most expensive options!
  • Not really ready to use without some modifications.
  • Since it’s a crib mattress, it’s pretty big! No size for small dogs.

Recommendation

I can’t believe I didn’t even consider using a crib mattress to DIY a dog bed before! So clever, right?

Yes, it is among the more expensive options, and yes you have to modify it a bit, but you can’t go wrong with something that was made for a baby.

Make sure you grab an organic cotton dog bed cover to keep it natural all the way through.

4. NaturoPet Natural Orthopedic Dog Bed

NaturoPet Natural Dog and Cat Bed, Virgin Wool & Coco-Latex, Outdoor/Indoor Water Resistant Pet Mattress Made in USA, Ultimate Support, Dual Zippered Removable/Machine Washable Covers

If you heard there was an organic latex dog bed but can’t recall the name, let me help you out.

You’re probably thinking of the NaturoPet, one of my top 5 favorite environmentally friendly and organic dog beds.

Now that I think of it, I’m wondering if maybe the people searching for Naturepedic dog beds were really thinking of this one? The names are super close.

Features & Pros

  • One of the few organic dog beds on Amazon that’s entirely natural from the inside out.
  • Filled with natural coconut coir fiber (that’s the “coco-latex”)
  • Handmade in the US
  • Orthopedic support for older dogs
  • Super durable
  • 3 sizes for dogs up to 120 lbs.
  • Cover is removable and machine-washable
  • Hypoallergenic

Cons

  • A bit pricey, although not unreasonable
  • Not chew-proof
  • No giant sizes for really large dogs

Recommendation

Out of all the organic dog beds on Amazon, this one is definitely my favorite.

It’s perfect for dogs of all ages and most sizes (sadly, not a good Great Dane bed, though).

The price is a smidge on the high side, but certainly not unreasonable compared to similar orthopedic dog beds.

As promised, here is the Etsy table. All prices are rounded to nearest dollar and subject to change.

5. Dr. Mercola Silk-Filled Bed for Pets

Dr. Mercola Silk-Filled Bed for Pets (Large), Non Toxic, Easy to Clean

If you need a totally hypoallergenic and organic dog crate mat, Dr. Mercola’s is the way to go.

It’s not only made almost entirely of natural materials, but it was designed to be entirely non-toxic for dogs who have allergies.

Features & Pros

  • 100% non-toxic
  • 100% organic- with
  • Made with an organic cotton outer layer, an organic silk liner, and non-toxic polyester filling.
  • No flame retardants or other chemicals.
  • Lightweight and travel-friendly.
  • 30-day money back guarantee.
  • Comes in 3 sizes from medium to XL

Cons

  • Not the prettiest organic dog bed
  • Not at all orthopedic
  • A bit pricey for such a simple bed

Recommendation

Sure, it’s not much to look at, but if you need something for a dog with incredibly sensitive skin and you’re not really worried about style, this is among the best picks.

The biggest drawback is the polyfill, which isn’t organic (at least not as far as I can tell).

6. Original Lucky Mats Organic Crate Mat Pad

Original Lucky Mats Organic Crate Mat Pad

Another option for your dog’s crate, the Lucky Mats pad by UnPetiteChou isn’t exactly what one would call orthopedic, but it’s thicker than most crate mats.

Features & Pros

  • Made with organic cotton and bamboo
  • Super plush and thick for a crate mat
  • Easy to clean, just throw it in the wash
  • Pad gets softer every time you wash it
  • A double-thick absorbent layer in the middle helps keep accidents from seeping through
  • Budget-friendly

Cons

  • Not thick enough to offer any real support to older dogs
  • Only one color (because it’s not dyed)
  • Only one size (although others are available through their shop).
  • No free shipping

Recommendation

If you want a totally organic and simple crate mat, this is the way to go.

While the one above is only for medium to large crates, they do make plenty of other sizes. In fact, they’ll make a custom size if you contact them.

While white is hard to keep clean with pups, the mat isn’t just washable, it actually gets better with every washing.

7. Organic Cave Dog Bed

Organic Cave Dog Bed

It’s hard to find organic cave beds that are large enough for dogs.

While I couldn’t find anything for the big pups, this one from Kadabros will work great for a small  breed.

Features & Pros

  • Made entirely of wool
  • 3 sizes
  • Four primary colors
  • Very stylish! It looks like a cozy sweater
  • Small dogs will feel very secure in the cave

Cons

  • Expensive to ship
  • Takes a while to arrive from Lithuania
  • None of the sizes are big enough for dogs larger than 22 lbs.
  • Not really washable (I suppose you could, but it would possibly ruin the material)

Recommendation

Like I said, finding organic dog caves isn’t easy, but if you have a small pup, this will definitely work. I love how it looks like a comfy sweater!

If this one is gone, check out other similar organic dog caves by Kadabros.

8. American Organic Cotton Fleece Blanket

American Organic Cotton Fleece Blanket

You’d think finding organic cotton fleece dog blankets would be a cinch, especially since there are like a million and one fleece throws available right now.

Unfortunately, you’d be wrong. It took me quite a while to find a blanket that actually said it was made of organic materials, versus “made in a factory” polyester. Thankfully, Etsy delivered!

This one by Sierra Linens is fairly plain (or minimalist, if you prefer), but it’s made entirely of organic materials.

Features & Pros

  • Fits in with any décor since it’s white
  • Comes in 4 sizes
  • Made with 100% Organic Cotton Fleece and 100% Organic Cotton Thread
  • No dyes or bleach, so it’s safe for dogs with sensitive skin
  • Super soft!
  • Serged edges to prevent fraying
  • Package-free, so it’s super eco-friendly.
  • Machine-washable

Cons

  • Pricey
  • White is hard to keep clean

Recommendation

What it lacks in pizazz it totally makes up for in comfort. Literally the only things I could find wrong with this blanket were the cost and the color (or lack thereof).

It’s super soft, cozy, and totally skin safe. I’d highly recommend it for dogs with allergies. Yes, it takes extra work to keep it clean, but so worth it.

9. Organic Felted Wool Dog Bed for Small Dogs

Like the organic dog caves, it’s easier to find felted beds for the small fries than the big guys!

This one from Amazon Handmade is perfect for toy breeds as is, but that’s not the best part. The seller will do custom orders, so you can get it in many other sizes!

Features & Pros

  • Beautiful modern mint color.
  • Made with organic wool.
  • Custom sizes upon request.
  • Custom colors are available upon request.
  • Made from one piece that’s hand-molded, so no seams to bust apart.
  • Every piece is unique since it’s handmade

Cons

  • Shipping is VERY pricey
  • Takes a while to receive (ships from the Ukraine)
  • No reviews on Amazon yet (which isn’t a sign that it’s bad, just that no one has bought one yet).

Recommendation

While the shipping is a major con (it’s almost as much as the bed), if you want a felted bed for larger dogs, this is your best option.

Of course, you’ll have to contact the seller to start a custom order, but at least that’s an option.

10. Chunky Wool Dog Bed

Chunky Dog Bed, Chunky Knit Pet bed, Pet cave, Pet Bedding, Merino Wool dog bed, arm knit, knit house, Dog cave, Pet house, by wooldeco

This last one is perfect for those looking for chunky-style organic wool dog beds for small pups (and possibly larger, see below).

Features & Pros

  • Made from 100% Merino wool
  • Sizes from 14-24 inches, so it can fit all small and some medium breeds
  • Custom sizes available on request
  • Handmade using chunky giant knitting
  • Comes in 15+ different colors

Cons

  • No free shipping, but the fee is super reasonable (less than $5)
  • Dry-clean only (or it will shrink)
  • No reviews yet (however the seller has 4 out of 5 overall stars)

Recommendation

I love going with Amazon Handmade for things like this because sellers are usually pretty accommodating.

While the sizes on the actual listing only work for small to medium breeds, you can ask for a larger bed.

We earn a commission if you make a purchase, at no additional cost to you.

Final RecommendationObviously, they’re all the “best organic dog beds,” or they wouldn’t be on my list. That said, I personally really love the NaturoPet Orthopedic Dog Bed.

It covers all bases- comfy, organic, eco-friendly, orthopedic, hypoallergenic…the only drawback is the fact that it’s not chew-resistant.

The best choice for you really just depends on what you’re looking for!

Tell me below, what are your picks for the best organic dog beds?
