How to choose the best bed for Greyhounds & other sighthounds
While I don’t have a Greyhound, my Pharaoh Hound Freya is very similar both in build and character traits.
There are a couple of things you need to understand about both their physiology and their personalities that will go into choosing the right bed.
Body shape
Greyhounds have very little body fat, which makes sense considering how incredibly aerodynamic they are.
This plays a major role in choosing a bed for two reasons.
First, little body fat (coupled with their short, sleek fur) means that they have a harder time staying warm than, say, a German Shepherd or a Husky.
Second, they don’t have as much padding throughout their bodies.
There’s a reason why sighthounds spend a lot of time on sofas! Freya cannot even comfortably sit on a hard floor, let alone sleep on one.
So, it’s important to choose a bed that helps keep them warm in the winter (but not terribly hot in the summer) AND that offers plenty of support for their lean bodies.
Energy level
A lot of people make the mistake of assuming that because Greyhounds are used for racing dogs, they’re extremely high-energy breeds.
While that’s partially true (my sighthound is definitely the most active and energetic of all the dogs I’ve had), they’re also major couch potatoes.
Freya will run and run and run, especially if she spots her arch-nemesis- Mr. Squirrel.
However, these bursts of energy are followed by long stretches of lounging on the couch or her bed.
So yes, they’re high-energy dogs…until they’re not. Then, they’re the laziest pups you’ve ever met.
What does this mean in terms of buying a bed? Basically, your Greyhound will be spending a lot of time in it, so it’s worth spending a few extra bucks to make it cozy.
There are, of course, other factors to consider. Does your dog chew? Wet the bed? Sleep curled up or sprawled out?
We’ll talk about those things within the individual bed recommendations.
For now, just know that I started my search for the best dog beds for Greyhounds by considering what I would actually use for my own sighthound.
Now, let’s take a look at my top picks!

1. Kuranda All Aluminum Heavy Duty Vinyl Bed Review

I know, it doesn’t look all that cozy, but give me a minute to explain why it’s still my favorite bed for sighthounds.
Features & Pros
- Virtually chew-proof thanks to the aircraft-grade aluminum and strong vinyl.
- Orthopedic without fluff, the hammock evenly distributes your dog’s weight.
- Raised design maximizes airflow in the summer to keep them cooler.
- Like greyhounds, the bed comes in many different sizes.
- 5 different color options
- Super easy to clean
Cons
- Pricey
- A pain to assemble
- Only one model is chew-proof, so don’t accidentally buy, say, the walnut frame model.
Recommendation
Freya has a raised bed that she absolutely loves. During the summer, we put it on the deck and she spent hours on it.
Now that it’s getting colder, we brought it indoors. While it’s not cozy on its own, we just put her favorite comforter (my son’s old Scooby Doo blanket) on top of it.
While she mostly sleeps on the sofa when we’re in the living room, when she’s alone she’ll hang out on her bed. She also loves to hide toys under it.
Of all the beds we’ve bought her, this is also the only one she didn’t eat.
2. Purple Dog Bed for Greyhounds Review

Purple, the same brand that makes high-end memory foam human beds, has a model just for pets.
We talked about it a bit when in our Casper Dog bed review, but let’s see why it’s a good fit for sighthounds.
Features & Pros
- Super comfortable and supportive memory foam.
- Made in the USA with non-toxic materials.
- Comes in 3 sizes (the M or L would work best here though)
- Washable cover that’s antimicrobial and somewhat waterproof
- Made with hyper-elastic polymer materials that keep their shape over time
- Super comfortable and supportive memory foam.
- Reacts to your dog’s body temp for stable warming and cooling.
Cons
- Pricey
- No replacement covers
- Not chew-resistant
- Waterproof cover is more water-resistant, according to some users
Recommendation
At night, Freya sleeps with my mom (who lives with me) on a memory foam mattress very similar to Purple.
I like that it’s made from essentially the same exact materials that go into their human beds, with a few adjustments to take a dog’s needs into account.
It’s definitely pricey, but I’m totally willing to pay extra for a high-quality supportive memory foam bed.
3. Best Friends by Sheri Vegan Shag Donut Review

Another one of my favorites across just about all categories, the Best Friends by Sheri bed is a wonderfully cuddly choice for dogs who sleep curled up.
Features & Pros
- Made with all vegan and non-toxic materials
- Super duper plush and cuddly!
- Keeps your Greyhound warm in the winter
- Raised rim gives an added sense of security.
- Machine washable- see note in cons though
- Water and dirt-resistant bottom
- Multiple sizes both with and without zippers (I would go with the L or XL)
Cons
- Not supportive in the middle
- Not ideal for sprawlers
- Tends to mat if you don’t dry it right after washing
- Not chew- or waterproof
Recommendation
If I didn’t think that Freya would view this as a giant plush toy, I’d buy her one in a heartbeat.
I love that the material is vegan (even though I’m not, no need to hurt animals when there are better alternatives) and so, so soft.
The reviews are astronomically positive, with very very few complaints.
That said, this is only ideal for Greyhounds who like to curl up for a good nap. It’s not great for sprawlers.
Also, since there’s little padding in the middle, it’s not the best choice for dogs with major joint issues.
4. PetFusion Ultimate Dog Bed Review

The PetFusion is another one that frequently pops up in my top 10 lists for the best dog beds.
It’s perfect for Greyhounds who love to sleep on a sofa, as the shape is quite similar thanks to the bolsters.
Features & Pros
- Made with a premium memory foam base for extra support.
- Bolsters are filled with eco-friendly recycled polyfill
- Durable poly/cotton twill cover
- Cover is also water-resistant and tear-resistant
- Non-skid bottom keeps it from sliding around when your Greyhound hops on
- Easy to clean. Wipe it off or toss the cover in the wash.
- Four different sizes- see note in recommendation.
Cons
- Zippers aren’t durable and are prone to breaking
- Cover is only tear-resistant against normal use. Won’t hold up to diggers.
- Not water-proof
- Very noisy fabric
Recommendation
While I do like this bed overall, it wouldn’t be the right choice for my dog just because she likes to dig in her bed before she gets settled. If your pup does the same, the cover just isn’t going to hold up.
However, for mellow hounds who just love sofa-style dog beds, it’s a fairly affordable choice (compared to similar high-end beds).
As far as sizing goes, it doesn’t come in a medium, which would have been my first pick for a Greyhound.
That said, the large is just fine for most sighthounds. While you can get away with a small weight-wise, I feel like it doesn’t have enough “leg room” for lanky dogs.
5. BarkBox Memory Foam Dog Bed Review

I always like to include at least one super affordable option for those who don’t have $100+ to spend on a dog bed.
For Greyhounds, the BarkBox would be my top pick that costs under $50.
It’s made by the same brand that delivers some of the coolest monthly toys ever to your pup.
Features & Pros
- Incredibly budget-friendly, with all except the XL coming in well under $50.
- Made with two types of memory foam- ergonomic and gel – for ultimate comfort.
- Lush and cozy exterior is gentle on your Greyhound’s skin.
- Cover and top fleece layer are removable and machine-washable.
- Comes with a 1-year warranty, which is even longer than more expensive beds!
- They include a fun toy surprise with your purchase.
- Four different sizes and colors
Cons
- Not at all chew-resistant.
- Although cover is supposed to be water-resistant, users complain that accidents seep through.
- No replacement covers
- Takes time to fluff up, so it’s not a “use right out of the box” bed.
- Zipper isn’t durable.
- Runs small, so you’ll need to order a size bigger than you think.
Recommendation
The BarkBox Memory Foam bed is surprisingly fantastic for such an inexpensive bed.
While it’s not ideal for dogs who chew or still have accidents, the real solid memory foam (versus polyfill or shredded foam) makes it a wonderful pick for adult Greyhounds who need a bit of support.
The foam isn’t incredibly thick, though, so I wouldn’t choose it for extremely arthritic hounds.
I like that they give you a 1-year warranty. I also love that they go the extra mile and toss in a fun toy for your hound.
As far as sizes go, I’d choose a large or even an XL, since I notice a few users saying that it was smaller than expected.

6. The Dog’s Bed Orthopedic Dog Bed

The Dog’s Bed by The Dog’s Balls is a good option for older Greyhounds who need a bit more support than we’ve seen in a lot of the other beds.
It’s a fairly mid-priced option that won’t break the bank, yet it’s loaded with the same great features you’ll find in pricier beds.
Features & Pros
- Total of 6″ of memory foam, including a 4″ solid base followed by 2″ of high-density orthopedic foam.
- .Waterproof cover prevents accidents from reaching the floor.
- Also includes a waterproof mattress protector
- Designed to be therapeutic and comfortable enough for dogs with joint issues.
- Comes in multiple colors and styles
- Replacement covers available
Cons
- Not chew-proof
- Only the trim comes in pretty colors, the beds are either grey or brown
- Cover isn’t all that durable
Recommendation
The memory foam is almost as thick as some of the more expensive high-end brands like Buddyrest (which seems to have all but vanished from Amazon).
That alone makes it a fantastic choice for Greyhounds who really need extra support for their joints.
While the cover may not be all that durable, you can buy fairly inexpensive replacements right through Amazon.
The colors are probably my least favorite thing about the bed. At first glance, it appears to come in all sorts of fun options. However, those are all just for the trim.
Of course, color is probably the last consideration on a long list of factors to look for in the best dog beds for Greyhounds, so I don’t take off many “points” for it.
7. Furhaven Pet Memory Foam Dog Bed Review

The Furhaven Dog Bed comes in multiple options with different types of filling, but we’re going to talk about their memory foam option, which is actually more supportive than their “orthopedic” beds.
While it’s not nearly as thick and luxe as some of the others we’ve discussed, it’s still a well-liked bed for those on a super tight budget.
Features & Pros
- Most options fall well under $100, and many under $50
- Several styles and colors, although they vary depending on the type
- Plenty of sizes, although again, some aren’t available in all styles.
- 3-bolster design is great for dogs who love to sofa beds.
- Cushioned headrest and cozy corners
- Faux fur cover is super soft and gentle
- 3″ memory foam
- Machine-washable cover
Cons
- Not even the slightest bit chew-resistant
- Not thick enough for dogs with serious joint issues
- Options are a bit confusing. Memory foam is actually better than their so-called orthopedic option.
- Not at all waterproof
Recommendation
As far as budget-friendly options go, the Furhaven is highly rated among most users. While it’s not the best choice, it’s among the best under $100.
However, the foam is way too thin for Greyhounds who really need extra support, such as retired racers.
I also find their entire listing very confusing, especially since their “orthopedic” option is basically just egg-crate foam.
8. K9 Ballistics Easy Clean Dog Bed Review
K9 Ballistics is pretty well-known for their chew-proof beds, such as their “Cujo Cot.
While this one isn’t chew-resistant at all, it does have some other notable features that makes it one of the best dog beds for Greyhounds.
Features & Pros
- Removable machine cover that fits like a sheet.
- No zippers or velcro.
- Microfiber sides and fake fur top make it super soft and gentle.
- Durable upholstery grade materials
- 5″ thick orthopedic foam
- Bolsters on all sides for added comfort
- Four colors and 3 sizes (you’ll want the L, most likely)
Cons
- Not chew-resistant (and not covered by their warranty)
- A bit pricey
- Since the cover is like a fitted sheet, it may be prone to popping off like one.
Recommendation
While this model isn’t even the slightest bit chew-proof, it’s among the easiest to clean.
I do have some concerns about the cover. I mean, my fitted sheet constantly comes off my bed’s corners, so I worry that it’ll do the same here.
That said, it’s a fantastic choice for Greyhounds who have accidents or love to get really messy.
9. Furhaven Orthopedic Round Cuddle Nest Review

If there’s one thing Freya loves, it’s burrowing. At night, she has to go under all the blankets, then pop just her snout out.
It’s hard to find good cave-style beds for larger and lankier dogs, though.
This one isn’t the best bed by a long shot overall, but it’s among the best for those who really want a cave snoozer.
Features & Pros
- Cave style is perfect for burrowers
- Super soft Sherpa on the underside of the blanket.
- Thick and warm materials.
- Machine-washable cover.
- 11 fashionable colors and multiple sizes
Cons
- Egg-crate foam isn’t thick enough for dogs with arthritis.
- Canopy doesn’t always stay up like in the picture
- Zipper isn’t durable
- Not chew or water proof
Recommendation
While I like the cave style and color options, I do feel like the foam is way to thin to offer support on a hard floor.
If you have carpeting and put a mat under it, though, it’s definitely my top cave bed choice for Greyhounds.
The fact that the canopy doesn’t stay up actually works in its favor, at least as far as my dog is concerned. It means she’ll be able to burrow.
10. Dogbed4less Orthopedic Gel Infused Memory Foam Dog Bed

I wanted to find you one last really good orthopedic option that would fit into most budgets.
Dogbed4less isn’t really the cheapest (even though the name would make you think otherwise), but they do offer great value for the relatively mid-range money.
Features & Pros
- 4″ Thick gel memory foam.
- Hypoallergenic high-density foam gel-infused foam helps regulate your dog’s body temperature.
- Suede cover is comfy and washable
- Extra stitching along the stress points makes the cover last longer
- 4 colors
Cons
- Only one size, but it’s large enough for all Greyhounds
- One customer felt that the cover wasn’t durable enough
- Several said it wasn’t as waterproof as it claimed t obe
Recommendation
Of all the memory foam beds, this is by far the thickest, making it my top choice for older hounds.
Yes, the cover doesn’t meet expectations for a few customers, but most older hounds are well past the chewing and digging stage.
However, if your dog is incontinent, you’ll want to add an additional waterproof cover to keep leaks from seeping through.
Final Recommendation
While it’s not the coziest by a long shot, Freya loves her elevated dog bed, so that’s my top choice. Make it snugglier by tossing a soft blanket on top!
Beyond that, they’re all fantastic choices, otherwise I wouldn’t have mentioned them.
