Places to Adopt a Dog in Atlanta

LifeLine Animal Project: With locations in Fulton, DeKalb, and Avondale/Ponce there are more than 50 animals who enter LifeLine Animal Project.  When you go to their website and click on Adopt A Pet (and then click on Adopt a Dog, because well…we love dogs), and then you have options to fill in, such as baby, young, adult or senior dog.  Play around with it!  You can choose a location, or just look at all of them.  Each pic of a dog that pops up gives you a description of him.  I had to stop looking, or I was going to be making a road trip up to Atlanta!

PAWS Atlanta: A no-kill shelter located in Decatur.  All dogs are spayed or neutered before they are adopted.  Each one will have a microchip as well, in case he gets out and-and can’t find his way home.  He will also be given heartworm prevention and be sure he is flea and tick free!  The adoption fee for all dogs in $250, but drops to $150 for a dog who is seven years or older.  Also, of you are 65 or older your fee is also $150 whether you decide to adopt a puppy or an older dog.  You can complete the application for adoption online at their website.

Animal Savers Rescue: All the dogs this shelter were slated to be euthanized, found abandoned, or brought in by their previous owners for one reason or another (I try not to judge).  All dogs are well taken care of before adoption, meaning they have been dewormed if needed, given prevention, and microchipped.  The mission of Animal Savers Rescue is to find a permanent solution to the homeless and abandoned animal problem by dedicated community efforts.  Education is key!  We (well, they) need people like you who aren’t smitten by a cute and cuddly little puppy.  They need people who see the love any age dog has and wants to give!  You can learn more about Animal Savers Rescue at their website

It always feels better when we have a game plan, especially when it comes to something as serious as finding making your home a forever for a dog.  Adopting a dog is so important, and they try to make it as ‘easy’ as possible for you regarding making sure he is all up to date on shots, and many (if not all) are microchipped.  I don’t want you to be deterred by the adoption process if it should take a few weeks.  That is just to ensure it is a good match and that you won’t be returning the dog.
