Is it possible to have a hypoallergenic mixed breed dog?
A friend recently asked me that in regards to what would happen if you take a non-hypoallergenic dog and breed it with one of the more popular non-shedding dogs.
We know that if mom and dad are both purebred hypoallergenic breeds, then the chances are good you will get a mixed breed hypoallergenic dog!
But what about when you start adding in other breeds?
The answer?
It could be possible. Could be.
When you start to mix breeds, it is like taking a gamble on which characteristics you will get from the breeds that are mixed.
So the same holds true for mixing a hypoallergenic dog with a non-hypoallergenic dog.
Will you get a hypoallergenic mixed breed?
You just don’t know.

Which Combinations Make a Hypoallergenic Mixed Breed Dog
1. Aussiedoodle

(Australian Shepherd and Poodle) I love this name! So we know the Poodle is hypoallergenic, however the Australian Shepherd is not.
You take a 50/50 chance on your Aussiedoodle affecting your allergies. Also, as far as shedding goes, you won’t really know if he will be leaving his coat everywhere.
It is a real possibility, but it is the chance you take when loving a mixed breed.
If you have very mild allergies, it may be worth a shot (literally, you can actually get shots to help with some dog allergies). For severe allergies, though, this may not be the combination for you.
2. Yorktese

(Yorkie and Maltese): You might also hear him called a Morkie these days.
Yorkshire Terriers and Maltese breeds are both hypoallergenic.
The chances of him affecting your allergies too bad are slim, seeing as each breed in your new mixed breed is hypoallergenic (that is of course as long as both sets of parents on each side are purebred).

3. Afador

(Afghan Hound and Labrador Retriever): The Afghan Hound in this mix is the hypoallergenic breed when he is purebred.
We know the Lab is not a hypoallergenic breed. Labs also tend to shed a lot.
You don’t really know what kind of coat your Afador is going to have, but you do know that taking care of his coat is important regardless if it is the long coat of the Afghan or the coat of a Lab.
Can you get a hypoallergenic mixed dog breed? Sure!
Just keep in mind that you can’t be 100% sure unless you know both mom and dad are non shedding hypoallergenic dog breeds themselves.
If you don’t absolutely have to have a hypoallergenic breed, but just thought it would be nice to have a little less shedding around the house, you might have a few more options for dogs who don’t shed quite as much.
Remember, though, all dogs shed, just some more than others.
