Don’t laugh! I came across a question on a forum of someone looking for a hypoallergenic hunting dog and someone suggested a poodle, I thought he was kidding. It turns out he was not! The poodle is a great hunting dog. He is brilliant and trainable; he would be a great companion in the woods. You don’t have to groom him like you might be thinking, that is just for show. Grooming is important, but the cut of his hair is not. While the poodle itself isn’t a mix breed, there are many great hypoallergenic dog mixes that include the poodle!
Lagotto Romagnolo
He was specifically bred as a water retriever. This super cute guy catches on quick during training (which is what you want when you take him hunting!) He loves the water, so let him frolic and play at times as well as work with you. The Lagotto is a great family dog, so if you have kids, he is a great addition. Although, if you run solo, he will be your best friend as well. Just be sure to keep his curly coat trimmed and groomed or he will quickly get matted. These guys mix very well with poodles!

Bedlington Terrier
He looks kind of like a sheep! He was bred to be a hunting and retrieving dog, although he was also used in dog fighting (so sad). These guys are super smart and very loyal. The Bedlington Terrier tends to not get along well with other dogs, but socializing him early and often will help him to learn to be tolerable (maybe even make a friend or 2). Due to his tight curly fur (I said he looks like a sheep!) you will need to have him professionally groomed every 2 months, so his coat remains healthy and matte-free.

Wirehaired Pointing Griffon
He makes a great non-shedding hunting dog for anything from rabbits to quail. This is a great tracking breed! He will stay within a good range of you, and has no problem going into water or land, to get the job done. His coat is very thick which helps him to stay warm and focus on the job during cold months. He actually prefers cooler temps, so maybe no summer hunting for him. The Griffon is a great watchdog and family dog as well, so he would make a great addition to your family!
