Most Bizarre Dog Myths I’ve Ever Heard
German Shepherds can only be trained in Germany.
The reason being that they don’t understand English that well (insert laughing-so-hard-I’m-crying-emoji). You can teach dogs commands in any language you wish. Just because German Shepherds are from Germany, doesn’t mean they only need to be trained there. And why would that only apply to this breed?
All pit bulls will eventually snap and turn on you.
I had to actually discuss this myth way more than I care to admit when I got my pit. I had a small child and so many people were concerned that my pit would eventually eat my baby. You couldn’t get any further from the truth on this one! Pits are just like any other breed, train them well and they will be good dogs. Pits get a bad rep because they are often used for fighting. How would you feel about your owner if you were forced to fight or treated badly? I might turn on him too!
Dogs can eat anything.
Your dog is not your garbage disposal. Essentially you can eat anything as well, but do you? Not everything we eat is good for our dogs. They have a different digestive system than we do. There are foods that are not safe for them to eat. My dog once ate a grape and before I realized what the issue was she was sick for 2 days! Please, for the love of your dog, do not feed him ‘anything’.
Shelter dogs are damaged goods.
It is not their fault they live in a shelter. At one time they had a loving and caring environment and for some reason or another, now they don’t. All that shelter dog wants is a home that is warm, safe and loving. Full of good food and lots of toys. He might even be a better pick for you than a puppy! Shelter dogs are far from damaged goods. Just talk to anyone who has rescued a dog.

My dog runs in the yard, he doesn’t need a walk.
Ugh, really? Actually, your dog would be better off with a walk and no run in the yard. Dogs are meant to walk. It actually helps to curb their boredom. Your dog can romp in the backyard all he wants, but it won’t tire him out like a good walk with you will. Besides, do you like looking at the same scenery every single day? So get outside with your dog. He needs it and it won’t hurt you either!
Dogs eat grass to soothe an upset tummy.
I actually fell for this myth, and part of me still thinks it is true. I have seen my dog graze the grass, not listening to thwarted efforts to get her to stop, and then later she has vomited all over my floor. Now, is this because she ate the grass or is this why she ate the grass? Which came first the chicken or the egg? While some say this is myth, some say this is true. I am still on the fence.
Dogs and cats are mortal enemies.
I used to believe this one as well! I actually thought I was a bit crazy when I decided to bring a kitten home to my Westie when I was a single gal. What was I thinking?! I had to get a baby gate and keep the dog from the kitten. All my poor dog wanted to do was play! The truth is they became best friends. Had I brought another dog home, they still would have needed the adjustment period, it had nothing to do with them being different animals. Since then I had 3 cats and 2 dogs at one point (I think maybe then I was a little crazy!) and dogs and cats have gotten along just fine.

These are some crazy dog myths, no? I am starting to think that these might have originated from people who are not dog owners. The best way to prove people wrong is to be a great dog owner! I loved having my pit when my baby was a baby and hearing people tell me that she was so dangerous. When in reality, she was a great member of our family, who was protective in a non-aggressive way.
