If you’re always on the go, leading a life of action and adventure, you’ll want one of these most active dog breeds along for your journey! Usually when we talk about “the most” this or “least” that, I add a huge disclaimer about how any dog can become the most or least whatever we’re talking about. In the case of active dogs, that’s only half true. Sure, there are other dogs out there aside from this list that do love activity. There are also many dogs who really don’t care for a ton of physical activity. They’re just not built for it. If you plan to do a lot of physical activities with your dog, you’ll want a pooch who not only can handle it, but loves to get moving. Check out our top picks for the most active dog breeds.

Most Active Dog Breeds

Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Pembroke Welsh Corgis are not only small but they are strong and athletic as well. They love to engage in physical activity since it is in their nature to be active. These dogs have a need to be walked every day, a long walk at that. These guys are super smart too! In fact, they made our list of the smartest dog breeds too!

Siberian Husky

Oh boy, do these guys LOVE to be active! In fact, I’d go so far as to say they should be avoided by families who just like to chill on the couch. They have an innate NEED to run, and they can run…and run and run. Huskies came from Northeast Asia, a cold climate, making ideal sled dogs.  These dogs require a great deal of physical exercise, but caution should be exercised in warmer weather. Siberian Huskies are very high-energy dogs, especially when they are puppies.

Labrador Retriever

A Labrador Retriever dog is one who is full of energy. They are a friendly breed of dog that just loves nothing more than to run around and have fun. These dogs enjoy their playtime and especially love playing in water. The Labrador Retriever is lively, friendly and great with kids and other dogs. If the Retriever does not receive an adequate amount of exercise, they may become a bit aggravated.

Jack Russell Terrier

Jack Russell Terriers are tireless, eager and full of energy. They seem to have an endless supply of energy. They are active both indoors and outdoors, so they need adequate space indoors and outdoors to run around. These dogs are fearless, obedient, spirited and they love playing games like catch and Frisbee.

Border Collie

A Border Collie dog has a high drive and is very energetic. Border Collies make a great running or jogging companion. Since they have so much energy, there are times when physical energy just isn’t enough for the Collie. These dogs are very agile and extremely fast and because of this, they need a large yard. In between adventures, get out in the yard and play a few agility games with them to satisfy their need for mental stimulation. They will do okay indoors as long as they have things to keep them occupied.

While these aren’t the only dogs that love to exercise, they’re definitely at the top of our list of first choices for the most active dog breeds. Remember, if you’re thinking of bringing home a new furry family member, make adoption your first choice.
