I came across a question in the forums recently asking if Blue Nose Pits are good pets.
The questioner went on to say that they’d heard the Blue Nose Pits were possibly less aggressive than Red Nose Pits.
Every part of that question needs to be addressed, and to that end, I’m going to talk about Pits in general.
Blue Nose Pits are Just Pits
I’m pretty sure I wrote about this in another article, but I think it’s worth mentioning again. Pits are just Pits. Other than coloring, there is no difference between a Blue Nose Pit and a Red Nose Pit. They are both Pitbulls. Neither variation is inherently more or less aggressive than the other. Think of it as the difference between a Black Lab, a Chocolate Lab, and a Yellow Lab. They may have different colorings, but all three are total goofballs. It’s like that.
Pits Make Great Pets
Now that we have the non-distinction between Blue Nose and Red Nose Pits out of the way let’s get down to the other part of the question. Yes, Pits make excellent family pets. Unlike their pervading stereotype, Pits are decidedly non-aggressive. Generally speaking, they love people, and when properly socialized, get along very well with other animals.
Pitbulls are especially fond of children. In fact, they’re known as “The Nanny Dog” because of their love of the kiddos. When you factor in their intelligence, desire to please, and intimidating appearance, the Pit becomes more and more desirable as a family dog.
The Sad Stereotype of Pits
Unfortunately, Pitbulls have a pervasive stereotype which is as unfortunate as it is erroneous. Because of irresponsible owners who use the power of the Pit in inappropriate ways, Pitbulls have developed a stereotype of being vicious, aggressive beasts. That is simply untrue.
Pitbulls CAN be made aggressive. They were bred to be fighting dogs, after all. The interesting dichotomy about Pitbulls, however, is that while they were bred to be fighters, they actually have gentle spirits. That means when a Pit is owned by a responsible master who trains and socializes it properly; they are some of the sweetest dogs you’ll ever meet.

Pitbulls – One of the Best Family Dogs Around
Because of their onerous reputation of being aggressive killers, it may be difficult to people who live in apartments to own a Pit. Many apartments don’t allow these “aggressive” dogs in their units. However, if you live in a condo which allows it, or you have a single family home, do not feel hesitant at all to adopt a Pit, Blue Nose or otherwise. They are fantastic family dogs which are loving to the point of doting, loyal, protective, intelligent, and eager to please. Pits are pretty much everything you could ask for in a family dog.
As always, make adoption your first option. If you’re looking for a Pitbull, you’ll have not trouble finding one at your local shelter. Whether you’re looking for a Blue Nose, a Red Nose, or a Brindle, you’ll find that your local shelter is more than likely bursting a the seams with Pits. Please, look at the Pits there first. They desperately need homes, and they are awesome family dogs.
