Tug
It lets a lot of energy out! Some people feel that playing tug with a pit will ‘create’ aggression or promote it. I call myth! Playing tug helps your dog (any dog) tap into his predatory side. It is already there, you did not create it, and you can not change it. Dogs are descendants of wolves; it is in their DNA. By indulging him in a game of tug, you help him to release that energy! It is a great training game. Teach him to ‘wait’ until you say it is ok to grab his tug toy. He will learn to ‘drop it’ or ‘leave it’ until you tell him it’s ok again. These are all commands he needs to know!

Which ball?
This is a fun mental and scent game for him. You need two balls, preferably different colors or one with a marking on it so you can know the difference. Rub your scent on one ball and leave the other alone. Before taking him outside (or inside) hide the balls, in the same spot. The object is for him to bring you back the ball with your scent on it.
Fetch and Hide
This is a fun combination of fetch that you typically play with your dog and also hide and seek that you played as a kid. It is more fun to play this game outside with your pit; there is more room for him to run and you to hide. Take his favorite toy with him that you use to play fetch with. Throw it as far as you can, and while he is running after it, you hide behind something. I know when my kids play hide and seek the dogs always give them away, so this is fun for him!
Jump and Snag It
A fun game to play and to allow him to jump and see how high he can get. It is probably best to play this outside if you are cramped on space indoors. You can use a tug toy or stick.
The Name Game
I love this game! I am going to start playing with my-my pit. You need a couple of different stuffed animals, but easy ones like bear or cat. Stick to just a couple at first so he can learn them. When you toss them, say what they are. He will learn the words! You will throw both and say ‘bear’ and he will bring back the bear and when he does, be sure to give him lots and lots of praise!
Dogs love to play. It’s a nice release for them and for you as well! It doesn’t have to be a long play session. He just loves the attention and time with you. Pits are full of energy and it needs to be released both physically and mentally.
