How To Keep Dogs From Chewing Through Their Collar
This post was inspired by the following question submitted to our site:
“ I’m fostering this sweet 10-month-old girl and need a recommendation on a leash, collar and harness that can’t be chewed through.”
Invest in puppy training classes. First off one of the best ways to get rid of the chewing problem is to send your puppy to obedience school. Whether you use some of the puppy training videos we have shared here before, or you enroll in a local class you need to train your dog to stop chewing everything. This isn’t so much about buying a better collar or leash as it is about making sure your dog understands that behavior is bad.
Make sure their collar and harness fit appropriately. Unless you are struggling with them finding these items and chewing when they aren’t wearing them, you really need to make sure that it is fitted properly. A properly fitting (affiliate link) collar and harness won’t leave any room for your dog to chew through it. If they are chewing through these items when they are off their bodies then you need to move them to an area your dog cannot reach.
Try a braided leather product. A braided leather leash, harness or collar will take much more time for your dog to chew through. It can also offer a different texture that will bother them enough to stop attempting. They are strong, sturdy and much more difficult for your dog to get through.
Switch to a chain product. Chains can often be looked at negatively, but the metal or chain collars and leashes many uses are perfectly safe and a great option to help break a puppy from chewing on their collar or leash. Just be careful and make sure it isn’t too heavy for your dog to wear. Go for something light weight, and also be much more gentle when using a leash to halt you dog since a chain can easily cause bruising and damage.
These tips for how to keep dogs from chewing through their collar are simple things you can do to make sure your dog is safe and not tearing apart everything you buy for them to wear.
