I recently stumbled upon something I find quite interesting. Mosquito spray for dogs. They key term here is “for dogs”. Of course, humans have been using mosquito spray for quite some time to keep those little buggers from eating us alive, but now there are formulas available for dogs as well. I think that’s pretty great, because nobody and no dog wants to be a snack!

Mosquito Spray for Dogs – This is a Great Idea

Let me start by saying that I have no idea if this actually works. One thing I do know is that nothing else will keep those little blood suckers away from my dog, so I’m willing to try it. I’m especially eager to give it a shot, because many of the formulations I’ve found so far use essential oils to repel those rotten mosquitoes.

Only Natural Herbal Defense Spray

This is one of the first mosquito spray brands I came across. This is the brand that got me interested in the idea of a spray. Their ingredients are all natural, and it contains no DEET, organophosphates, or pesticides. In addition to being free of chemicals, this mosquito spray uses lemongrass, citronella, patchouli, clove, and neem oil to help repel mosquitos. Get it at Only Natural Pet.

Dr. Harvey’s Herbal Protection Dog Spray

This is another mosquito spray I found that is supposed to protect form a variety of insects. Again, I haven’t tried anything in this article, I just think it’s interesting.

Dr. Harvey’s Herbal Protection Dog Spray is made with all-natural ingredients. It uses Witch Hazel, Catnip Oil, Erigeron Oil, Neem Oil, Citronella Oil, Cedarwood Oil, Geranium Oil, Eucalyptus Oil, and organic Rosemary extract to repel insects.

GNC Dog Essential Dog Insect Repellent Spray

This is another spray this is both a mosquito spray as well as an all-purpose repellent. I’m interested in this one for the same reason as the others. The majority of its ingredients are natural. Some ingredients in this one are man-made, but by and large, this mosquito spray is natural. It uses Peppermint, Citronella, Clove, and Rosemary to repel insects.

Mosquito Spray with DEET – This is a BAD Idea

I would like to touch on the fact that the reason I’m so interested in mosquito spray for dogs is that DEET is extremely toxic to dogs. Never, never, EVER use a human mosquito spray on a dog. It can severely impact their health.

Symptoms of DEET poisoning in dogs includes:

  • Skin irritation
  • Vomiting
  • Tremors
  • Excitation
  • Ataxia
  • Seizures

None of this is good. Of course, it’s treatable with a good bath if the irritation is topical. Gastric lavage with activated charcoal is needed to treat DEET ingestion. While a good outcome is likely with treatment, there’s no need for your dog to go through such trauma. So remember, DEET is bad, bad, bad for dogs.

Mosquito Spray for Dogs – Genius!

I’m quite excited about the prospect of keeping bugs from biting my dog when we’re out and about. While I always keep my dog protected with flea, tick, and heart worm preventative, that doesn’t keep bugs from actually biting them. The idea of a mosquito spray to help keep my dog comfortable is pretty cool.

To reiterate, I have never used a mosquito spray for dogs. It’s just an exciting concept to me that I thought I’d share with all of you.

Have you ever used mosquito spray or any other insect repellent made for dogs? I’d love to hear your stories and thoughts.
