In this installment of my Pitbull Puppy Training Tips series, I’ll be giving you some pointers on how to easily teach your puppy to sit.
Some people have a hard time with this one, but it’s actually quite simple once you get the hang of the process.
Read on for the do’s and don’ts, plus a step-by-step guide!
Pitbull Puppy Training Tips for the Simple Sit
I’ve seen people approach teaching sit to a puppy any number of ways. Most of these ways will work… Eventually. However, some of them are just exercises in futility. In the interest of being thorough, I’ll be going over the don’ts as well as the dos.
The Dos and Don’ts of Teaching Sit
When teaching your puppy to sit, there are a few things that you absolutely NEVER want to do. Because if you do them, you will handicap your progress, and you might even teach your Pit some things you definitely did NOT intend.
Don’t:
- Ever attempt to train your puppy without treats. In my one of my previous Pitbull puppy training tips articles, I referenced this. Essentially, you are doomed from the start if you don’t use treats.
- Use the old “push their butt down” method. At least not on its own. Without treats and/or another method used in conjunction, pushing your puppy’s butt down is just an invitation to a wrestling match.
- Yell or scold. If they aren’t getting the drift, it’s because YOU aren’t doing something right. They follow their trainer’s lead.
Do:
- Follow the foundation of all of my pitbull puppy training tips articles. Keep the treats flowing. Dogs love treats, and they’re a great way to keep their attention and keep them motivated.
- Praise them. I mean go overboard. Putting their butt on the floor should be like the second coming for these guys.
- Use the simplest method for teaching sit
Pitbull Puppy Training Tips: The Simple Sit
As promised, here is what I believe is the easiest way to teach your dog to sit.
- Get your puppy’s attention with a treat.
- Hold the treat above their head so that they begin to reach for it.
- As your puppy reaches for the treat, bring the treat backwards and over its head.
- Your puppy will follow the treat’s path and naturally sit.
- Praise, praise, praise, and tons of treats.
This really is the easiest way you’ll ever teach your puppy to sit. In fact, it’s so simple, I explained it in bullet points! This is quite possibly the easiest command in my Pitbull puppy training tips series that you’ll ever teach.
