We recently had a chance to try it out and let me just say, it truly is magical!
Read on for our full review, including what exactly it is and what my dog thought of it.
Hint- it involves a birthday surprise for my girl (yes, my dog is spoiled)!
What is Stella & Chewy’s Marie’s Magical Dinner Dust?

Stella & Chewy’s Marie’s Magical Dinner Dust is quite the mouthful of a title, isn’t it? That’s actually the shortened version, and it doesn’t really tell you exactly what it is.
The full name of the flavor we tried is Stella & Chewy’s Marie’s Magical Dinner Dust What’s Shak’n Bac’n Recipe Freeze-Dried Raw Dog Food Topper.
Ah, that’s a bit more descriptive, right? So, now we know that it’s a freeze-dried raw food topper for dogs and that it’s obviously in “dust” form.
Let’s go over some of the questions I looked into and considered before accepting the product and while trying it out.
What’s in the Magical Dinner Dust?
Ingredients vary depending on the type that you choose. This particular recipe includes:
- Bacon
- Pork
- Pork Liver
- Beef Liver
- Beef Kidney
- Beef
- Natural Bacon Flavor
- Tocopherols (Preservative)
Aside from the preservative, every ingredient comes from real meat. No gluten, grains, or binders. All of the meats are free of antibiotics and hormones. The beef comes from grass-fed cows in North America and New Zealand.
Typically, we don’t give Freya beef, because it can upset her stomach in certain forms. She can’t eat canned beef dog food or cooked ground beef, for example.
However, since beef appears farther down the list and she gets so little of the dust in each serving, she did fine with this. Now, if your dog IS allergic to beef (and not just mildly sensitive to it occasionally), definitely go with one of the other varieties.
Is it safe for my dog?
Safety is obviously our number one priority when it comes to choosing anything that our dogs consume, be it treats, food, or toppers. However, when we’re talking raw food, safety becomes an even greater factor to consider.
According to their website, Stella & Chewy manufacture all of their products in their own US facilities. In other words, they don’t outsource it, which means they have full control over every aspect of the manufacturing process.
All of our frozen and freeze-dried raw products go through HPP (high pressure processing) to naturally destroy harmful bacteria while assuring the food’s nutritional value is not affected.
Stella & Chewy
As mentioned above, they use hormone-free meats, all sourced from trusted partners. While I won’t make promises over something that I can’t personally control, I can say that I have great confidence in their safety record. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t give it to my dog, period; and I’ve given all of my dogs multiple different Stella & Chewy products over the years.
Is it a good value for the money?
Once I figure out if something is safe for my girl, I ask myself, “Is this worth the money?” It’s a major understatement to say that times are tough all over the place right now.
To make matters worse, dog food prices seem to be going up while our bank account balance is going down! So, I can totally understand why you’d want to know if something with the word “dust” in the name is worth $20-ish a bag.
In my opinion, I truly do think it’s a good value for the money. A serving size is 2 tablespoons per cup of food. If you use the full serving on one cup of food a day, it’ll last about two weeks.
However, since this is a topper and not your dog’s primary source of nutrition, you could get away with using less. We did one tablespoon on most days, and we still have half a bag left after two weeks.
Also, Freya gets bored with her kibble easily and ends up wasting SO much of it. Magical Dinner Dust makes her regular kibble more interesting! So, it saves us money because she’s rejecting less food.
What did Freya think of Magical Dinner Dust?
Freya turned four at the end of last month, so I made her a birthday cake (my first one ever). I used this recipe from Love from the Oven, except I only did one layer.
However, I completely forgot to get the Greek yogurt for the icing, and I didn’t add little biscuits to Freya’s. Instead, I sprinkled some of her Magical Dinner Dust on top of the cake (and on the plate around it). Then, I took her out to her “treat stump” that she associates with “sitting pretty” so I can take pictures.
Little miss Freya snagged the cake while I was trying to focus the camera! She’s usually so good with “wait,” but apparently her urge to taste magical dusty cakey goodness was too overwhelming.
The look on her face when she realizes it’s all gone is just priceless.
I had to hold the plate for her to make sure she got every last speck!
So, yes, it’s safe to say that my dog loves Stella & Chewy’s Magical Dinner Dust!
I would definitely buy it again! I think next time I’ll go with the Duck, Duck, Goose recipe, just for variety.
