Because Animals Noochies organic dog cookies are a hot item right now, so I had to know- are they really worth all the hype?

So, I headed to Amazon to grab a bag for my Pharaoh Hound, Freya.

She’s fairly picky about crunchy treats, so if she likes them they have to be good.

Long story short, she really loves them! Not much more to say about that, since she can’t tell me why.

Of course, my dog eats poop, so rather than just trusting her “opinion,” we’ll look at all the pros and cons from a human standpoint, too.

Let’s start with a bit about the brand themselves, though. I like to know who I’m buying from before I even hit the “purchase” button.

Just so we’re literally on the same page, here are some basic details and a product link below:

About Because Animals

Before I even think about buying a new food or treat for Freya, I head to the company’s about page.

A good back story isn’t vital to my decision, but it doesn’t hurt, especially with pricier items.

Because Animals has a great back story!

The company was started by two friends who met while volunteering at a cat rescue in Canada.

Joshua and Shannon wanted to create a line of dog food and treats that don’t harm other animals or the planet.

That’s exactly what they did, with the help of a vet, a stem cell scientists, and a cell tissue engineer.

Their line is rather unique because it completely replaces factory-farmed animals with “cultured meat.”

While the Noochies don’t contain meat-cultured or otherwise- I still think we should talk about that concept a little more, in case you want to try their other products.

What the heck is cultured meat?

I actually learned about this recently when I came across a news article about lab-grown meat for people.

I know the words “lab grown” sound scary, but don’t run away just yet. Cultured meat is actually really intriguing.

Because Animals does a good job of breaking it down on their site. Here’s a TL;DR snippet, though:

It is grown in a way that is similar to an embryo developing in the womb, except that cultured meat begins with a small collection of animal cells that are grown in a nutrient-rich environment outside the animal.

While everyone in my household- including my son, mom, cats and dog, eat meat, I haven’t eaten mammals for about 30 years.

Since my reasons are solely based on personal ethics (and not cultural), lab-grown meat would actually be acceptable for me.

Basically, I could theoretically eat a real bacon cheeseburger without actually consuming a once-living animal.

It’s time for us to move on to the Noochies now!, but if you’re interested in learning more, take a look at the video below, or this one, or this one.

Noochies Organic Dog Cookies - Treats Made From All Natural Healthy Ingredients Are Perfect For Training Small And Large Dogs - Human-grade Biscuits Made From Ancient Grains And Peanut Butter

As mentioned above, the Noochies organic dog cookies are totally free of all meat- cultured included.

So, what is in them? Nothing but wholesome goodness! Let’s look at the ingredients.

Because Animals Noochies ingredients

Because Animals Noochies dog cookies contain just a handful of ingredients.

  • Organic Whole barley flour
  • Organic Peanut flour and peanuts
  • Applesauce (also organic)
  • Organic Bananas
  • Organic Coconut Oil
  • Dried yeast and yeast extract
  • Organic ground flaxseed
  • Mixed tocopherols (an organic compound)

The name actually comes from the nutritional yeast, aka “Nooch.”

As Because Animals explains:

Nooch is a complete, sustainable protein containing all 10 amino acids essential for your pup. And, it’s an excellent source of beneficial B vitamins: B1 plays a critical role in maintaining a healthy metabolism, B2 supports immunity, and B9 helps with brain development.

Now that we know what’s in them, let’s go over the pros and cons.

Pros

  • Wholesome organic ingredients, as seen above.
  • Excellent source of B vitamins.
  • Made with healthy fats.
  • All ingredients are human-grade.
  • Relatively low-cal (about 5 kcals per treat).
  • Apparently tasty, as my dog likes them!

Overall, I love the ingredients. Freya has a sensitive tummy, so we’re pretty careful about what she eats.

She also got a little chunky last year and we’ve been monitoring her calories a lot more lately.

They actually smell good, too. Not really a decision-defining pro, but it doesn’t hurt.

As far as taste goes, I can’t tell you about that. Freya likes them, but I stopped short of tasting them myself.

Human-grade or not, there are just some things I’m not willing to do for the sake of a review. 😀

Cons

  • On the expensive side.
  • Only one flavor, which can be an issue if your dog hates bananas.
  • Only one size (both in terms of the bag and cookies themselves).

As you can see, there really aren’t many cons, but each one can be a deal breaker depending on your dog and your budget.

The cookies themselves are really small, which is great if you have a small to medium dog breed.

Larger dogs can still enjoy them, but you’ll run out faster. That’s a bit of an issue when you consider the cost.

That said, the cookies are really lightweight, so you get more than you expect when you first see the bag.

I learned that when I accidentally knocked the entire bag on the ground and raced my dog to pick them up.

Final thoughts and recommendation

Overall, Because Animals Noochies are a good choice for even the pickiest of pups.

As I said earlier, Freya really likes these tasty little organic dog cookies, and that’s saying something.

She only enjoys a handful of crunchy dog treats, and banana isn’t one of her favorite flavors.

The biggest issue for me, though, is the cost.

While I know a lot of people who have no issue spending $12 on a smallish bag of dog treats, it’s not really something I can afford to do often.

That said, they are a great occasional treat that I’d buy every few months or so.
