Choosing the best truck dog beds requires a bit more homework than just grabbing one for your house.

It’s a little more complicated that buying, say, an orthopedic dog bed.

After all, riding in a truck isn’t quite as safe for your dog as just chilling at home!

So, let’s start with some safety considerations, then we’ll check out some recommendations.

Our Top Pick

If you just want to skip ahead to our top pick, go with the Big Barker SUV edition.

Should you put a dog bed in the back of a truck?

Since the word “truck” can refer to anything from an SUV to a pickup to an 18-wheeler, that answer is “it depends.”

If you’re shopping for a dog bed for a pickup truck because you want Fido to have a comfy place to rest during stops, then yeah, go for it.

However, you should never drive around with your dog loose in the back of a pickup.

Please, just don’t. It’s a recipe for disaster.

If you must drive with your dog in the bed of a truck, put him in a strong crate and make sure it’s 150% secured.

On the other hand, the “way back” of an enclosed SUV is actually the best spot for large dogs.

Same goes for giant 18-wheelers, except you’ll need something that fits in the back of the cab (and not in the shipping container).

Okay, now that we’ve gotten the safety considerations out of the way, let’s look at the best truck dog beds.

I’ve chosen a variety designed to fit every scenario and definition of “truck.”

10 Best Truck Dog Beds

You’ll notice that I mention a few great dog beds for truck beds below.

Remember, these aren’t for driving around with Fido.

I’m imagining a camping scenario. You head to the mountains with your pickup, and want to give your pooch a cozy spot off the ground.

Or perhaps a road trip where you sleep under the stars in the truck bed with your dog.

Basically, I’m assuming that you’re taking me seriously when I say don’t drive with your dog in the back of a pickup!

Got it? Good! Now, check out the table below for a quick peek, then read on for reviews.

1. Big Barker Dog Bed: SUV Edition

Big Barker Backseat Barker: SUV Edition (Orthopedic Shock-Absorbing Dog Bed for Back of Sport Utility Vehicles)

Available on Amazon

You know how much I love Big Barker Dog beds for large breeds, right?

Well, you’ll be happy to know that they also make an SUV dog bed!

Let’s take a look at the features, then we’ll go over the pros and cons.

Features

  • Comes in three sizes for different SUVs
  • Two layers of comfy memory foam, including an orthopedic top layer.
  • The “wings” adjust to fit just right in your SUV.
  • Machine-washable and easy to clean
  • No installation needed, just put it in when you need it and take it out when you don’t.
  • Water-resistant, but far from waterproof.

Pro & Cons

PROS
Flexible sizing
Supportive
Made in USA
Great shock absorption
CONS
Not chew-resistant
Not waterproof
Measurements are weird
Pricey

If you need an orthopedic dog bed for the back of an SUV, you won’t find much better than this one.

Sure, it’s not as supportive as their line of indoor dog beds, but it offers far more support than most other SUV beds I’ve looked at.

Since it’s easy enough to pop in and out of the car, you can use it in hotel rooms, too.

Just keep in mind that the measurements include the “wings.”

Some customers complained about that, because it made them choose the wrong size.

Also, remember that it’s not waterproof, just resistant.

Recommendation

I’d recommend this one for all large breeds who ride around in the back of an SUV.

Yes, it’s a bit pricey, but remember, it’s made for large dogs.

Just check and double-check the measurements of your SUV before buying.

2.   K&H PET PRODUCTS TRAVEL & SUV PET BED

K&H PET PRODUCTS Travel/SUV Pet Bed Gray Large 30 X 48 Inches

Available on Amazon

If your budget is too tight to spring for the Big Barker, then the K&H might be a good pick.

Features

  • Two sizes – small and large
  • Outer bolster made from strong nylon for added durability.
  • Water-resistant backing
  • Polyfill interior (NOT foam)
  • Removable microfleece cushion
  • Non-slip fabric on the bottom to keep it from sliding all over your car.
  • Machine washable
  • One year limited warranty

Pro & Cons

PROS
Affordable
Water-resistant
Comfy bolsters
Washable
CONS
Not chew-proof
Not supportive
No “wings”

This is NOT a supportive bed by a long shot. It’s stuffed with polyfill, the same “fluff” you find in craft stores.

It’s also not chew-proof, but that’s not uncommon. It’s hard to make a chewproof dog bed for trucks.

On the other hand, it’s incredibly affordable and easy to maintain, so that could outweigh the cons.

Plus, like the Big Barker, it’s easy enough to place in and remove from your truck.

Recommendation

While I wouldn’t recommend this one for a senior dog sleeping on a hard SUV or truck bed, it’s great for younger dogs.

I also like it for truckers, especially if the back of your cab already has a bed to help add more support to it.

3.  PetSafe Solvit Car Cuddler Seat

PetSafe Happy Ride Car Dog Bed - Best for Bucket Seats - Fits Cars, Trucks, Minivans and SUVs - Comfortable and Machine Washable - Durable Vehicle Pet Bed - Grey

Available on Amazon

For those with smaller breeds, the PetSafe Solvit is a great dog bed for the back seat of a truck.

Features

  • 2-in-one dog bed and seat cover.
  • Fits dogs up to 30 lbs.
  • Keeps dog hair off your car seats.
  • Soft microsuede liner over the bolster cushion.
  • Adjustable headrest strap and seat anchor makes it easy to install
  • Machine-washable.

Pro & Cons

PROS
Seat & bed
Machine washable
Easy to install
Durable
CONS
Not chew-resistant
Only 1 size
Only for small breeds

With a 4.5-star rating across just over 200 reviews, enough people feel like the pros definitely outweigh the cons.

The biggest issue is, of course, the size restrictions. It only supports up to 30 lbs.

I do love that it’s a 2-in-1 combo, rather than just a hard dog car seat or a free-floating bed.

Recommendation

Obviously, I can only recommend this one if your dog weighs less than 30 lbs, so my fellow larger breed pals will want to look elsewhere.

If you do happen to have an itty bitters, then I’d definitely recommend it for the back seat of a car, SUV or truck.

4.   Large Elevated Folding Pet Bed Cot

YEP HHO 47 Inches Long Elevated Folding Pet Bed Cot Travel Portable Breathable Cooling Textilene Mesh Sleeping Dog Bed (47 Inch (Pack of 1), Red)

Available on Amazon

If you’re looking for a great dog bed for your pickup truck bed for those “camping under the stars” nights, I love this travel cot.

Features

  • Made with strong Oxford cloth and covered with mesh.
  • Stays cool even on hot nights
  • Big enough for medium to large breeds at 46″L x 24″W x 9.2″H.
  • Folds down and stores in a travel bag.
  • PVC legs with non-skid feet.
  • Easy to clean with wet cloth

Pro & Cons

PROS
Affordable
Carrying bag
Keeps cool
Easy to clean
CONS
Not chew-proof
One size

As far as cons go, there aren’t many!

I mean, it’s not a top-of-the-line elevated cot like the Kuranda or anything, but it’s a good little travel bed.

I love that it folds down into a compact little travel bag, so it’s easy enough to store in the back seat of your cab.

It’s also incredibly affordable at well under $50!

Recommendation

As I said, this is a great option for your truck bed, but only if said truck remains stationary.

I can definitely see setting it up next to your own sleeping bag for a breezy yet warm night beneath the stars.

The only issue is the single size. It’s too big for a small breed and too small for a giant dog.

So, I’d recommend it for medium pups up to around the lab end of the large dog spectrum.

5.  BarkBox Memory Foam Platform Dog Bed

Barkbox Memory Foam Platform Dog Bed | Plush Mattress for Orthopedic Joint Relief (Large, Grey)

Available on Amazon

At first glance, the BarkBox Memory Foam bed doesn’t really seem like a good travel bed.

Give me a minute, though, and you’ll see why I choose it.

Features

  • 4 sizes, from small to XL and multiple colors
  • Made with therapeutic gel memory foam
  • Waterproof and machine-washable cover.
  • Orthopedic bed for senior dogs
  • Can fit in a crate

Pro & Cons

PROS
Affordable
Supportive
Bonus toy
Waterproof
CONS
Not chew-proof
72 hours to fluff
Not for giant breeds

Let’s start with the pros, shall we? First, the price is super affordable, especially for such a great bed.

This one is also among the most supportive on our list! Plus, it comes with a waterproof cover.

However, like most travel beds, it’s not chew-proof at all, and it doesn’t come in sizes for giant breeds.

The biggest potential problem, though, is the long wait for the rolled-up mattress to regain its shape.

If you’re buying it today because you have to travel tomorrow, you’ll be stuck with a half-fluffed bed.

Recommendation

As long as you have enough time between the bed’s arrival and your trip to allow it to fluff AND you don’t have a giant breed, this is a great option.

Since it can fit in a crate, it’s even a dog bed for a pickup truck in motion (for those times when it’s just a must).

I also like it for the way back of an SUV (aka the cargo area).

However, it’s not really a great fit for the plain old back seat, unless you happen to have a huge car/truck or a tiny dog.

6.  Noblecamper 2-in-1 Dog Bed and Sleeping Bag

NobleCamper 2-in-1 Dog Bed and Sleeping Bag - (Red/Blue, Large (30" Dia.))

Available on Amazon

Last up, we have the Noblecamper! It’s a pretty neat option, but be warned, it’s pricey!

Features

  • Bottom zipper lets you unfold it to turn it from a bed into a sleeping bag
  • Made with a strong nylon shell and liner. .
  • High-loft polyfill insulation.
  • Shell is water-resistant and dries fast when it is exposed to moisture.
  • Stake-out loops to secure the bed to the ground.
  • Bed compresses to fit into a small sack, which can be attached to a backpack.
  • 30″ diameter is large enough for small through the lower end of large breeds.

Pro & Cons

PROS
Water-resistant
Highly portable
2-in-1 design
Durable
CONS
Not chew-resistant
Pricey
Not supportive

First, the pros. I love the unique design and how it’s both a sleeping bag AND bed for your pooch.

Plus, it compresses down to almost nothing, taking up about as much space as a large water bottle (like a Yeti tumbler, for example).

As far as cons go, the most obvious one is that price tag. It’s the second most expensive on this list, after the Big Barker.

The other issue is the lack of support. With only about an inch of polyfill fluff, it’s just not orthopedic enough for elderly breeds.

Recommendation

If you have a senior dog or a tight budget, this one is out. Go back up to the Big Barker or the Bark Box. 🙂

For the rest of you, I’d recommend this as an all-around great dog bed for trucks and SUVs.

Since it’s so flexible, you could even use it as a dog bed for a truck floor (as long as it’s a roomy truck floor, of course).

It’s especially awesome for camping out in the back of your truck!
