Hi there! I’m Nicole, the editor-in-chief and one of the writers here at DogVills. I’ve been a dog owner for most of my adult life and a dog lover for much longer than that. I grew up with a wonderful German Shepherd named Jake, who I loved SO much that I named my son after him. When I’m not writing for DogVills or my own site, Pretty Opinionated, I love spending time with my teenager (when he actually lets me) and my Pharaoh Hound, Freya. I’m also an avid reader AND a total TV fanatic.

If you want to keep your pup comfy without hurting the planet, you’ll love our favorite eco-friendly dog beds.

Each one is made with upcycled, recycled, or sustainable materials.

Not only are they good for the environment, but they’re often safer for your pet since the materials are non-toxic.

Don’t miss these organic dog beds.

What materials to look for in green dog beds

In an ideal world where marketers always told the truth, finding a green dog bed would be as simple as entering a search term and clicking on the results.

Trust me, it’s never that easy. Some beds call themselves “green” just because they use cotton for the cover, then stuff the bed full of chemical-laden filling. Sorry, that doesn’t count!

So, what did I look for if I didn’t rely on buzz words in the description? Here’s a rundown:

  • Organic cotton, either uncolored or dyed with natural food dyes.
  • Bamboo, hemp, and other sustainable materials.
  • Upcycled pet-safe linen scraps, such as furniture coverings that would have wound up in the dump.
  • Recycled materials in the filling (one bed is stuffed with recycled plastic bottles)
  • Durability- because even the most eco-friendly bed isn’t very green if it only lasts a month before making it to the trash heap!

Not every bed will use every green material, of course. I did try to stick with the greenest of the green, though! Let’s see what I found, shall we?

I really thought that I’d have an easier time finding eco-friendly dog beds on Amazon than Etsy, but turns out it was the other way around.

Since I found so many great options over on the handmade marketplace, this list is evenly split between the two.

1. P.L.A.Y. Pet Lifestyle and You Eco-friendly Lounge Beds

P.L.A.Y. (Pet Lifestyle And You) P.L.A.Y. - Moroccan Lounge Bed - Large - Marsala

P.L.A.Y (which stands for Pet Lifestyle and You) makes numerous eco-friendly dog beds, but their lounger is my favorite.

It comes in sizes ranging from small to XL, so you’ll find the perfect fit for your dog. Check out the features and pros, then we’ll look at the cons.

Features & Pros

  • Covers are made with hypoallergenic heavy-duty cotton material, so it’s a good bed for dogs with allergies.
  • 100% machine washable and dryer-friendly.
  • Stuffed with PlanetFill filler, which is made from 100% recycled plastic bottles.
  • The brand is Gold Certified by Green America’s Green Business program.
  • Furniture-grade craftsmanship means it’s extra durable. While it’s not chew-proof (see cons), it can hold up against normal wear and tear.
  • Since it’s made in a facility that meets safety requirements for baby products, it’s extra safe for your pup.
  • Comes in 24 cute colors and styles
P.L.A.Y. Pet Lifestyle and You Denim Orange Lounge Bed for Dogs, Medium

Cons

  • Not all of the styles come in all sizes
  • Not orthopedic, since the padding is a bit on the thin side.
  • Not chew-proof, or really even chew-resistant.
  • Different colors have different fabrics, and some aren’t all that cozy (the denim has a few complaints for being too stiff).
  • Some of the styles are only available through 3rd party sellers. Shipping is INSANE on those!

Recommendation

Great for dogs who are part the chewing stage but not quite at the point where they really need an extra supportive bed.

Just pay close attention when ordering, as many of the styles aren’t Prime-eligible and shipping is beyond astronomical on them.

2. Petique Bamboo Orthopedic Memory Foam Pet Bed

The Petique may not be much to look at, but if you’re looking for eco-friendly orthopedic dog beds, support matters more than style.

Features & Pros

  • Made primarily with bamboo materials.
  • The egg crate foam topper adds an extra layer of comfort.
  • Sustainable bamboo fiber cover is removable and washable.
  • Naturally hypoallergenic
  • All non-toxic materials
  • Replacement covers are fairly inexpensive.
https://www.instagram.com/p/B5Lrn0VHfYN/

Cons

  • Fairly basic and boring looking.
  • Not chew-resistant or water-resistant.
  • The white cover is hard to keep clean, and you have to buy the brown one separately.
  • The memory foam is questionable, as some is more eco-friendly than others.

Recommendation

I love that Petique is a woman-owned & family-owned business. I think it’s important to shop small as often as you shop big.

My main concern is the memory foam. Only the cover is bamboo. The type of foam isn’t listed and some are better than others.

3. Smiling Paws Pets Washable Premium Dog

Smiling Paws Pets Large Washable Dog & Cat Bed/Lounge with Extra Soft Organic Cotton Sides, Premium Plush Puppy & Kitty Sofa for Medium & Large Doggies & Animals (35" x 26" x...

Smiling Paws is a new-to-me brand, but it’s family-owned and seems to really focus on high-quality pet products.

The best part is that their beds are super affordable!

Features & Pros

  • Luxury bed at a budget-friendly price.
  • Made with organic cotton.
  • Super soft faux Sherpa fabric (made from non-toxic materials) keeps dogs cozy.
  • Non-skid bottom to prevent sliding.
  • Machine-washable (but on the hand-wash setting)
  • Money-back guarantee that you’ll love it.
https://www.instagram.com/p/BeDswXElryQ/

Cons

  • Only two sizes, neither of which is big enough for large or giant breeds.
  • Not chew-resistant.
  • Padding isn’t thick enough for older dogs.
  • Faux Sherpa is non-toxic, but not organic in any way.
  • No removable cover, you have to wash the whole bed.

Recommendation

It’s really hard to find 100% eco-friendly organic dog beds on Amazon, so I’ll let the faux Sherpa slide.

It is made with non-toxic materials that are gentle on your dog’s skin.

This is definitely one of the most affordable green dog beds. Too bad neither size is big enough for large breeds.

4. NaturoPet Natural Orthopedic Dog Bed (Pillow Style)

NATUROPET Natural Dog and Cat Bed, 100% Natural Virgin Wool & Organic Cotton Covers, Indoor Pet Beds Made in USA, Premium Support, Dual Zippered Removable and Machine Washable Covers

This bed as well as the next one both come from NaturoPet, but they’re different enough that I felt like they each deserved their own spot on the list.

Features & Pros

  • Pillow style is highly portable and travel-friendly
  • The entire thing is eco-friendly, from the inside out!
  • 100% natural virgin wool and organic cotton materials.
  • Repels moisture (not water-proof, but still better than the others)
  • Handmade in the US
  • Super durable, thanks to expert craftsmanship and strong materials.
  • Comes in 3 sizes for dogs up to 120 lbs.
  • Easy to clean, machine-wash the cover and tumble dry on low.
https://www.instagram.com/p/B4vb4wTpY4c/

Cons

  • While semi-supportive for young dogs, not quite padded enough for older dogs.
  • No XL size, so giant breeds are left out.
  • While it’s durable, it’s not chew-proof
  • A bit on the pricey side

Recommendation

Of all the eco-friendly dog beds on Amazon, those made by NaturoPet are by far the greenest of the bunch.

Every last part of this is made with sustainable and earth-friendly materials. Plus, it’s super durable, so it won’t end up in a landfill anytime soon!

5. NaturoPet Natural Coco-Latex Pet Mattress

NaturoPet Natural Dog and Cat Bed, Virgin Wool & Coco-Latex, Outdoor/Indoor Water Resistant Pet Mattress Made in USA, Ultimate Support, Dual Zippered Removable/Machine Washable Covers

If you need something with a bit more support for your senior dog, you’ll want to take a peek at this NaturoPet model.

Features & Pros

  • Again, the ENTIRE bed is eco-friendly, including the filling!
  • Like the pillow-style bed, the outside is made up of virgin wool and organic cotton.
  • Inside, you’ll find natural coconut coir fiber (hence the name, coco-latex).
  • Hypoallergenic from the inside out, so it’s perfect for older dogs with sensitive skin.
  • Highly durable and built to last.
  • 3 sizes for dogs up to 120 lbs, and 3 different natural colors.
  • Two removable and machine-washable inner and outer covers
https://www.instagram.com/p/B0Gu6IhJWMX/

Cons

  • A bit pricey
  • No sizes for giant breeds
  • Not chew-proof

Recommendation

Out of all the eco-friendly orthopedic dog beds, this is definitely my favorite.

It’s super supportive, durable, and totally organic from the inside out. What more could you ask for in a green dog bed?

6. SafariPets Washable Orthopedic Dog Bed

Washable Orthopedic Dog Bed SafariPets

Created by SafariPets on Etsy, this simple yet stylish bed is all about comfort and convenience without sacrificing the planet.

Features & Pros

  • Made with orthopedic memory foam and soft yet durable fabric.
  • Inner cover is made of cotton and uses super strong thread.
  • The center features a pre-formed “hollow” to support your dog’s spine.
  • Soft upholstery-like cover comes off and can be washed.
  • Filled with hypoallergenic and antibacterial filler
  • 3 sizes to fit dogs from small to large breed
  • Fairly budget-friendly for a handmade bed
https://www.instagram.com/p/B0N61o6A3jw/

Cons

  • No “giant” size for XL breeds.
  • No chew-proof
  • Takes up to a month to arrive
  • Costs a bundle to ship to the US

Recommendation

Yes, it costs quite a chunk to ship, but I think the overall cost is still pretty fair for a handmade bed.

It is made in Russia, so if that’s an issue for you, you’ll want to skip this one.

Personally, I don’t let my feelings for the politics of a nation hold me back from supporting the individuals within it, and that’s about all I’ll say on the topic (this isn’t a political post, after all!).

It’s a beautifully made bed with plenty of great orthopedic features for aging dogs. Well worth it!

7. Hakuna Matata Eco-friendly large dog bed

Hakuna Matata Eco-friendly large dog bed

When you search for eco-friendly dog beds on Etsy, one seller dominates the scene!

FormerFibres makes a massive array of pet beds, but this (along with the next) is one of my favorites.

Features & Pros

  • Made from cotton, recycled poly thread and kapok fiber.
  • All materials are 100% upcycled, rescued from bedding of off-cuts that would have ended up in landfills.
  • Even the poly thread is made from recycled plastic bottles.
  • The natural Kapok fiber filling is all-natural and sustainable.
  • Kapok is also hypoallergenic, non-toxic, and naturally resists bacteria. It’s also odorless.
  • FormerFibres plants a tree with One Tree Planted for every bed sold!
  • Lightweight and easy to carry thanks to the attached handle.
https://www.instagram.com/p/B5az7dLpZ4B/

Cons

  • Only one size. However, you can find pretty much every size in different styles on their storefront.
  • Kapok compresses when your dog sleeps on it and needs to be fluffed back up.
  • Not machine washable.
  • Shipping is quite pricey.

Recommendation

As far as green dog beds on Etsy go, the ones made by FormerFibres are definitely the most eco-friendly overall.

I love the slouchy look of the beds. That’s intentional, by the way, and not a sign of poor craftsmanship. It gives them a more natural look.

If this one is gone, check FormerFibres’ storefront on Etsy for other options. Like I said, they have a ton of different styles in all sizes, including the next bed on our list!

8. Botanical Garden Eco-friendly large dog bed

Botanical Garden Eco-friendly large dog bed

Except for the fabric, pretty much everything about this bed is identical to the one above.

Still, let’s go over some other pros and cons that I didn’t mention up there.

Features & Pros

  • See above, as the materials are all the same.
  • Every bed is one-of-a-kind, so it makes a unique gift for a new dog owner.
  • Kapok is odorless, so it doesn’t have that typical noxious memory foam odor.
  • Easy to care for, just vacuum or spot clean. DO NOT wash, though.
  • It even arrives in eco-friendly packaging!
  • All vegan materials, except the suede label. However, they will switch to a faux suede upon request.
https://www.instagram.com/p/B4VKdIWJ0yc/

Cons

  • Washing it will destroy the Kapok.
  • Large beds only fit dogs up to 90lbs. No giant size, but they do accept custom orders.
  • Since the fiber compresses, it may not be the most supportive for dogs with hip problems.
  • Not chew-proof

Recommendation

I love how FormerFibres really goes above and beyond to make every aspect of their beds totally eco-friendly.

Their beds are beautiful and so natural looking. I’d recommend them for adult dogs (past the chewing stage) that don’t need something totally orthopedic yet.

9. Boho Style Eco-Friendly Dog Bed

Boho style dog bed

The Boho Style bed from AelooPaws is a fantastic option if you want something in a minimal style and don’t really need an orthopedic bed quite yet.

Features & Pros

  • Made with recycled PET (basically, plastic bottles), upholstery-grade linen fabric and natural dyes.
  • Lightweight and travel-friendly. It has a handle attached for carrying.
  • It even comes with a travel bag!
  • Machine washable in cold water.
  • Three sizes for dogs from Chihuahua size up to German Shepherd size.
  • Free shipping
  • Budget-friendly for a handmade bed
https://www.instagram.com/p/B5U39d4CxEw/

Cons

  • No XL for giant breeds
  • Colors fade over time due to the natural dyes
  • Ships from Russia, so it could take a while to arrive.
  • Not very thick, so not ideal for dogs with arthritis
  • Not chew-proof

Recommendation

I love the natural and simple style of this one! If you need a good bed that you can take on the go, it’s a great pick.

That said, if your pup has arthritis or other joint issues, I’d go with something more supportive for regular use and save this one for travel.

10. BandGMartin Custom Luxury Dog Bed

Paul Smith Print Luxury eco friendly dog bed

This last one by B & G Martin is definitely the priciest of the bunch as well as the least green overall.

So, why does it make the list? First, it’s built to last, so it won’t end up in a landfill after a few months. Second, some of the materials are eco-friendly. Others MAY be, depending on the source.

Features & Pros

  • Made with a designer textile print, faux down, and therapeutic foam cushion.
  • Comfortable and supportive.
  • For each bed that you buy,  B & G Martin pays for a dog to be spayed or neutered.
  • Cushion has a mold resistant outer shell  that is eco-friendly.
  • Made in the USA
  • Tons of other styles available!
https://www.instagram.com/p/BP04AD9Bwp1/

Cons

  • Very pricey.
  • Rayon, one of the materials, is made from plants, but some say it’s not eco-friendly because of the production process and source.
  • Nylon is also sketchy, depending on how it’s made.

Recommendation

While it’s not the most eco-friendly of the bunch, it’s a good choice if you really want a designer bed that will last.

I love that part of the proceeds go towards spaying and neutering!

Since it’s a one-of-a-kind, if it’s gone by the time you check it out, take a look at other luxury beds from B & G Martin.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is buy-now.png

Final Recommendation

Out of all the eco-friendly dog beds on this list, my favorite is #5, the NaturoPet Natural Coco-Latex Pet Mattress.

Not only is it entirely “green,” but it’s also among the most supportive out of all the beds.

My next choice would be either of the beds by FormerFibres. They really go above and beyond to be good to our planet!
