For those who have injuries, illness or disabilities a service dog can be not only a wonderful companion but a life changing addition to their family.  For those with allergies, here are the Best Hypoallergenic Service Dogs.  While no dog is truly hypoallergenic, there are many breeds that have fewer effects on those with allergies.  These dog breeds offer not only an excellent service companion, but much fewer incidents of allergy issues while in use.

Poodles:  The classic hypoallergenic service dogs are going to almost always be poodles.  The standard poodle is a great choice for a service dog.  Not only are they easy to train, but they are loyal and very intelligent dogs.  The ability to notice needs and help their companion is very important.  Poodles are much easier to train than other breeds.  They can easily be taught to help fetch items as well as recognize warning signs of problems as they are happening.

Schnauzers:  The other classic breed that is less likely to create allergy issues are Schnauzers.  Not only are these loving and easy to train hypoallergenic service dogs, they are much easier to deal with for those who have allergy issues.  With less shedding, great temperaments and the ability to train for service needs a schnauzer is a great choice.

Look for a hypoallergenic service dog that has:

  • Been trained specifically for this job.  True service dogs are trained specifically to see needs in their companion.  They are also trained to alert, fetch and help as needed.
  • Physical strength to assist as needed in emergency situations.  A small dog will not be able to move a person, carry items that are needed, or even bark loud enough to alert help.
  • Good temperament around a number of people.  Service dogs must be able to go along with their companion everywhere. This means being exposed to a lot of people in various crowded situations without agitation or reactions.

Individuals with disabilities often need the help of a service dog.  However, there are a multitude of factors to consider. No dog is going to be truly hypoallergenic.  As long as there is pet hair and dander, there will be potential for allergy flares.  For some however, the lower rate of issues with these breeds makes them a viable choice for service.  Hypoallergenic service dogs are a great tool used to help individuals with a multitude of daily life needs.
