10 Most Popular Dog Names & Why You Should Avoid Them
In 2014 the following names were among the most popular dog names and commonly chosen for puppies: Bella, Max, Buddy, Lucy, Daisy, Molly, Bailey, Maggie, Charlie, and Sadie.
Other tops runners in dog names were Spot, Rex, Buster, Rocky, Baxter and Copper.
Choosing a dog name is very personal. You want to give your pet something unique to them, but also something easy to say.
Why?
Because most pet owners will also have kids, family and veterinarians around that will have to say their pets name often, especially during obedience training!
Simple names are perfect for those with kids, but really fitting in with your family and pet personality is important.
- Choose based on family vote.
- Choose based on pet personality.
- Choose something unique so a lost pet is easier to find.
- Choose something unique for a fun talking point.
- Choose based on fit with family name.
Get your kids involved and create a list of names that aren’t traditional dog names, but just names you enjoy. Any name can work for a pet -they don’t have to be typical pet names. As you fill out records at veterinarian offices, you’ll also want something that is fun and flows well with the rest of your name.
- Name after cities, states or countries
- Name after colors, styles or fun themes
- Name after sports teams that your family loves
Choosing a popular pet name is something to avoid, because you want your pet to be unique and you want their name to reflect that personality.
One of the best ways to choose a great dog name is to have everyone in your family contribute 2-3 names to a list then go around the room letting each person say why they like or don’t like specific names. You can pretty quickly see which names are most popular on the list and be able to make a choice from there.
Instead of naming your new puppy Budd, Rex or Molly – think outside the box and name them something fun, unique and focused on what your family feels they will be like.
What do you think about the most popular dog names? Did you choose one of them for your pooch? How did you come up with your pup’s name?
