Small Hypoallergenic Dogs For Kids
Maltese: This dog won’t get to be more than 7 pounds. He does great in small living quarters, but will require daily walks to keep him healthy. Otherwise he is happy just playing with your indoors. He has a long coat, but don’t let that fool you. He does not have an undercoat, which means he sheds very minimally (all dogs shed to some degree). He will make a great addition to your family! Bichon Frise: Great with kids, this little dog is small but mighty. He will be able to keep up with your kids and then curl up with them on the couch after a long day of playing. If you do not have a ton of space for him to run, do not worry, he will do just fine with walks and playing. Your Bichon will need to be groomed regularly to keep his fluffy coat looking healthy. You can brush him at home, but be sure to take him to the groomers regularly. Generally speaking, he makes a great family pet for those of you with kids!
West Highland White Terrier: These small hypoallergenic dogs are big on personality. They are alert, and will sound when strangers come by to warn their owners. Commonly referred to as “Westie”, they are playful, sturdy dogs as well. They will require grooming to avoid getting mats in their hair. Brushing him a few times a week and taking him to the groomer to be trimmed is a good way to keep his coat nice and mat-free. Your Westie will adjust well to apartment living if you do not have a big yard for him to run around in.

Mini Poodle: Poodles are easy to train and very smart which make them great family dogs. Their small size is great for kids, as they can get on the ground and play for hours with their new friend. They do require some grooming, but just think of it as bonding time between you and your new family member. Poodles love the water, they were bred to be water retrieving dogs. Toss a ball or a frisbee in and let him go and get it for you on a hot summer day! Read our Mini Poodle Breed feature.
There are other small hypoallergenic dogs out there that will meet your criteria, but this list should help to get you started. Remember that if you choose a puppy, you are training that puppy and he is growing up around small children, meaning if you come across a breed that you are interested in, yet maybe they are not so good with kids, just remember that you are teaching him. If he is around small children as a pup, he should do just fine.
