I’ve grown up surrounded by animals – dogs, cats, cows, goats, sheep, and horses and that has shaped me into what I am today – a crazy cat lady who always has a place for one more cat (or a dog). I’ve got two female cats – Kitty and Roni, and two tomcats – Blacky and Shaggy, but I also feed my neighbors’ cats when they come for a visit. I just can’t say no to them.

You can teach your dog to perform amazing tricks, but have you ever thought what only your dog can teach you?

I came upon this curious question a couple of days ago, and it got me thinking.

Do you what to know what the answer is?

Then read below.

Things Only a Dog Can Teach You

I’ve often heard people say that they prefer the company of their pets to the company of their fellow humans.

They say that we have much to learn about how to act towards each other by observing our pets. And I think that they are right.

So, here are seven things that your dog can teach you.

#1 Love with all your heart

Do you know why dogs are my favorite animals?

Because they love unconditionally.

They don’t expect anything in return for the affection they give you. In addition to this, they will forgive you any mistakes at once and continue to show you how much they love you.

Unfortunately, human relationships often come with strings attached, and it seems that the “live happily ever after” exists only between book pages. Sad, right?

So, take your dog’s example and love with all your heart.

Give everything you could without expecting anything back. Maybe your heart will get broken, but you might also find someone worth loving.

#2 Be loyal

Who doesn’t remember Lassie and her heart-warming story of loyalty and friendship? Dogs show us the meaning of the word “loyalty.”

They will be with you no matter what.

Even if you have a really bad day and yell at them for chewing your favorite shoes, they’ll still be there for you when you need them!

#3 Don’t hold a grudge

One of the most terrible human characters is that we hold grudges. I’m sure that you remember the person who bullied you in high school or the one who humiliated you in front of your boss.

Dogs are not like that.

They don’t hold a grudge against you when you can’t spend time with them or when you forget to take them for a walk.

They won’t be angry that you’ve played with another dog or that you’ve come home late.

It’s far easier to live your life when your grudges are not plaguing your mind. Just look at your dog, and you’ll realize that it’s a waste of time to stay angry or plot revenge.

#4 Live in the moment

Dogs don’t worry about their past and the mistakes they have made.

It’s not a big deal for Rover that he has forgotten the trick you showed him yesterday. And he is not worrying about what’s going to happen tomorrow.

He is living in the moment.

Can you imagine going to bed without mulling over tomorrow’s exam or business meeting?

Or getting up in the morning and not worrying about how your day will go?

It’s a special type of freedom which only small children and animals enjoy.

#5 Have fun

Today’s world is so busy that once we grow up, we don’t have enough time for everything.

We have to prioritize, and as a result, we often have to give up the things we love. As children would say it, we are no fun.

Dogs are the opposite. They love to run, chase, jump and play. And they do these things every single day.

As such, they are an excellent reminder that we also must have fun from time to time. After all, what’s the point of living if you’re only working?

#6 Material things are not important

At the end of the day, your dog won’t care if he has to sleep in a simple dog bed or an expensive one.

He is just happy to have a roof over his head and a soft place to lie. Material things don’t matter to Rover because he knows what’s the most valuable thing – you and your love.

It’s a simple lesson that most of humanity ignores.

It’s not important how much money you accumulate and how many fancy things you have. What matters are the people who are there for you.

#7 Enjoy the simple things

It doesn’t take much for a dog to get excited. A tasty treat, a walk in the park or the simple pleasure of watching the snow fall.

Can you remember the last time you enjoyed a sunrise or stopped to see the view?

Or had the time to curl up with a book in front of the fireplace?

If the answer is no, it’s time for you to slow down and be more like your dog. Enjoy the simple things because that’s where happiness is found.

As you can see, your dog can be an excellent teacher and make you a better person. He can show you how to be kind and compassionate and how to live your life to the fullest.
