DOG TRAINING TIPS TO HELP YOUR PUP OVERCOME FEAR OF STRANGERS
Don’t Force Interaction: Forcing a shy dog to be around people they are unfamiliar with can cause more damage than good. You want to encourage them to interact, not make them feel they are being forced. Many dogs who are fearful of strangers are actually afraid due to past abuse. It can be very hard on them when there is no level of trust between themselves and the new person.
Take Things Slow With One Person At A Time: When introducing your pet to new people, do so slowly. Don’t bring them into a crowd and expect them to be okay. Work slowly with one person at a time. If you have family coming to visit, let your dog take their time sniffing and getting to know each person quietly and in a non threatening manner. Don’t throw them right in the middle of a boisterous reunion with lots of new smells and noises to overwhelm their sense.
Let Them Create Boundaries: Let them lead you in what is acceptable and what is not. Their own natural boundaries will be the ones you need to focus on maintaining. If they are okay sitting in the room with a stranger, but not okay with that stranger touching them – that is good. It is acceptable for your dog to create their own comfort zone.
Build Their Confidence: Always make sure to encourage and build their confidence when they meet new people. Let them know you are proud with affection, words, petting and even treats. If they associate new people with rewards and love, it will help the feel stronger and happier to oblige. Building up their confidence is one of the most important dog training tips and reward training can be a big part of that.
Follow these dog training tips and work slowly with your dog to help the overcome their fear of strangers. Don’t expect too much, and mostly watch and listen to them. Follow their lead and allow them to choose who they will gravitate toward and when they will let their guard down. A shy dog typically is one that has been abused or abandoned. They may fear the other persons actions toward them, or may simply fear you are giving them away to someone new. Work with your dog and listen to their signs of need and comfort when attempting to train them to overcome their fear of strangers.
