Now that you have a ton of great dog name ideas to start with, let’s go over a couple of quick tips on how to choose the perfect one!
How to Choose a Dog Name
As you’re choosing your dog’s name, remember two very important things: you will have to live with it and your dog will have to live with it. Hopefully for a very long time in both respects!
Keeping that in mind, here are some questions to ask yourself as you choose.
1. Is it easy to say over and over during training?
Rule number 1 when choosing a dog name: make sure you can easily say it over and over (and over) while training your dog.
Cuddlesome Cornelius may sound darling in theory, but it’s quite a mouthful to repeat dozens of times a day!
Before you settle on a name, say it out loud several times. If it doesn’t roll off the tongue, try something else.
2. Can I use a shorter nickname?
If you have your heart set on a long show dog style name (they always have astronomically long names, don’t they? )consider the nickname possibilities.
For example, if you really love the name Wigalicious Von Wigglebottom, you could call him “Wiggles” for short.
Also, make sure you choose one nickname for training purposes!
My girl Mocha has many nicknames. She’s Mochachino (yes, I know it’s longer than her actual name), Chino, and Chi-Chi.
She responds to all of them now, but while training, we just stuck with Mocha.
3. Does it sound too much like a command?
Remember, you’ll be using at least the very basic commands quite a bit throughout your dog’s life. These include things like sit, down, stay, come, heel, leave it, and so on.
Try to avoid names that sound like those commands. “Steven,” for example, is adorable, but it sound like “leave it.”
4. Will I feel comfortable calling it out in the dog park?
If you plan to go to the dog park, make sure you feel comfortable calling out your pup’s name.
Even if you don’t do parks, think about the others that will be using that name. The vet, for example.
Stand outside and yell the name really loud. Make sure others are around to here you.
Are you embarrassed? Choose a different name!
5. Will I still love this name in 10 years?
This is SUPER important, because your dog will (hopefully) be with you for many years to come.
Don’t choose a name based on a trend you’re loving today. By their nature, trends fade and we get bored with them.
Also, don’t name your dog after a brand new love interest! Like trends, some relationships aren’t meant to be.
You may really love Joe today, but what if you break up next year? Do you really want to call out Joe’s name every time you call your dog?
These tips will help you choose a good name, but only you can decide what makes a GREAT name!
Choose something that you love and that reflects your family, and you won’t have any regrets!
