If you’re curious about dog breeds that drool the most, keep reading! Let’s be real for a minute; dog drool is one of the grossest parts of having a dog inside your home. Some breeds will drop puddles of slobber onto furniture and floors like it’s their standout talent.

So I decided to list the biggest drooling offenders so any new owners have a heads up about this issue. After all, if you just can’t handle a constant stream of spittle, it’s better to know ahead of time.

But before I dive into the list, it’s important to discuss why dogs drool. It’ll provide some context for the list and highlight situations where drool could be a sign of concern.

Why Do Dogs Drool?

The most concise description of dog drool is a saliva build-up inside a canine’s mouth. It’s necessary to break down food to help it move down their throat. This way, food doesn’t get stuck inside the esophagus and cause a choking incident.

As a result, drooling is often a response to smell and taste. For example, dogs may start drooling whenever they hear a new bag of food being opened. Another example would be them looking at your food on the kitchen table and drool falling onto the floor.

But what people don’t realize is excessive drooling can indicate a severe health issue. Some examples of potential underlying causes of an uptick in drool include:

  • Digestion issues
  • Mouth and teeth problems
  • Stings and bites
  • Nausea
  • Injuries
  • Anxiety
  • Stress

Also, you should be aware of your dog’s drooling capacity. If you know what’s considered normal for your dog, it becomes rather apparent when it’s become excessive out of nowhere. You can then schedule a vet visit and determine what’s happening with their dog.

10 Dog Breeds That Drool the Most

Since you’ve got a handle on what causes dog drool, let’s dive into our list. These ten dog breeds have a well-earned reputation for being among the top droolers. So anyone who wants to keep their home dog drool-free will want to steer clear!

1. Bulldog

You can’t construct a list of drooling dog breeds without including Bulldogs. Their drooling capabilities almost exclusively define these lovable, wrinkled-faced dogs. It’s not uncommon to see a Bulldog drag a monster piece of drool across your home.

Of course, drooling isn’t their only defining trait. Bulldogs are also known for their sweetness and incredible loyalty. Honestly, it’s hard to find a person with a single bad thing to say about these beautiful dogs besides their drooling.

The only trouble with Bulldogs is their propensity to health issues. Sadly, their short snout (the reason for their drooling) makes them susceptible to respiratory problems and overheating. It’s something that potential owners will need to consider before getting one.

2. Saint Bernard

Saint Bernards are known for two things: being gigantic and drooling. In these categories, very few breeds can compete with these massive dogs. But their owners love having them around even with their large size and drool puddles.

Any Saint Bernard owner will praise their gentle personality and hilarious natures. These dogs are often placed in comedic and family movies like Beethoven. Saint Bernards are just fantastic dogs to have in your life.

But sadly, some owners can’t handle taking care of them. Their imposing size can be a handful, and hot climates don’t mix well with their overall well-being.

3. Bloodhound

bloodhounds are one of the dog breeds that drool the most

Bloodhounds can go a little under the radar when it comes to drooling. They’re more known for other traits like their powerful sense of smell. After all, it gives them relatively cushy jobs in law enforcement

But potential owners need to know about their excessive drooling capabilities. I used to have one that was constantly drooling all over the place inside my apartment. It reached the point where I considered putting plastic on my furniture to protect it against the onslaught of drool.

However, I wouldn’t hesitate to own a Bloodhound again. These droopy-faced dogs have one of the most docile temperaments with a very rewarding personality. But their intelligence makes them one of the most stubborn dog breeds, so training them does require patience.

4. Bullmastiff

The facial folds of a Bullmastiff offer insane drooling capabilities. I’ve seen pools and pools of drool coming out of these facial folds. Owners often wonder, “when in the world will it stop?”

But please, don’t let those facial folds scare you away from the Bullmastiff. This breed integrates well into families when provided with regular training and socialization. Plus, there may not be a better guard around than Bullmastiff.

However, owners will need to keep their guarding instincts in check. It’s why constant training and socialization are crucial to owning a Bullmastiff.

5. Great Dane

Choosing the best puppy food for giant breeds is an important part of raising a healthy horse of a dog! Check out our top picks!

The Great Dane continues a theme of this list, large dog breeds. It makes sense considering a larger dog often means a bigger mouth, causing more drool. So it shouldn’t be surprising to see these giants on my list.

In any case, Great Danes also have a superb reputation for being family pets. These dogs are known for wanting to please everyone and forming strong bonds. You won’t find another dog who loves its family more than a Great Dane.

But living with one will often require wiping massive drool puddles off furniture and floors. Their size makes it seem like you’re living with a horse inside the house.

6. Bull Terrier

Today, in pitbull puppy training tips, we'll discuss how to potty train your puppy fast. There's no magic bullet, but these tips can help make it easier.

Bull Terriers aren’t the most drool-heavy breed on this list. But they can still create quite a slobber when put up to the task. I certainly saw my fair share with my parent’s Bull Terrier. She’s ruined many of my jackets by drooling an entire puddle on them.

Aside from the drooling, Bull Terriers are known for their physiques. These dogs are powerful and jump extremely high compared to other breeds. It’s an incredible experience to see one leap into a swimming pool.

Bull Terriers have stubborn personalities. These dogs will require a patient, experienced trainer to teach them commands. In any case, I’ve come across many Bull Terriers who have become excellent and loyal family pets.

7. Newfoundland

Our next challenger, Newfoundlands, is an iconic dog breed coming from Canada. Like many others on this list, they’re considered a large dog breed. Their large size and slobbery chops make them experts at drooling.

Drooling isn’t the only water-related activity Newfoundlands love. These dogs are renowned for their love of swimming and running through puddles. If there’s water, a Newfoundland will find and use it to its advantage.

But it’s essential not to let their large stature fool you; these canines are as affectionate and calm as any breed. You’d be hard-pressed to find a sweeter and more devoted dog than Newfoundlands. They genuinely embodied the phrase “man’s best friend.”

8. Basset Hound

Basset Hounds have earned admiration around the world for their temperaments. These dogs are calm, cool, and collected while packing quite a drooling punch. You can expect their big upper lips to unleash a flood of drool from time to time.

However, this drooling doesn’t stop them from being a fan favorite. It’s easy to see why people adore them, given their unique appearance and adorable personality. Everyone could benefit from having a Basset Hound in their lives.

9. Dogue de Bordeaux

Dogue de Bordeaux, also known as the French Mastiff, has insane slobber capabilities. Their muzzle is fitted with jowls to cause them to drool even more than most other large breeds.

It also doesn’t help that these Mastiffs have short noses. This attribute is known for contributing to high slobber levels. So it’s almost the perfect situation to create a drool-heavy dog breed.

Other notable Dogue de Bordeaux traits include a heightened protective instinct and a playful demeanor with their families. Due to this, socialization and training become necessary to encourage good behavior.

10. Labrador Retriever

Wondering which dog breeds sleep the least? These 7 puppers are definitely not for couch potatoes! Check them out!

I can’t think of a single person who doesn’t like Labrador Retrievers. Their friendly personality and calm demeanor in adverse situations make them a perfect fit for many homes. It’s why these dogs are among the most popular in the United States.

But it doesn’t stop them from being drool machines. These pups have a reputation for loving to eat. Unfortunately, this love makes them susceptible to producing massive amounts of drool. So it’s not uncommon to see them dragging a drool string all over the house after dinner.

These ten dog breeds have a unique ability to create floods of dog drool. It’s one of the many qualities that makes them special. So let’s take some time in the comment section to celebrate these breeds by sharing our experiences with them!
